The Chosen Worldbuilding/Facts
• The Burning happened roughly ten months before the events of The Chosen
• The Burning killed off 2/3 to 3/4 of the population. None of the dragon eggs survived it either, and only a small handful of young hatchlings survived.
•The dragons among The Chosen are all 4 years or older. Around the age of Moonwatcher during her arc.
• The powers only started to appear AFTER The Burning. Leafspeak was obviously around before this, but elemental manipulation was not.
• Several new plants appeared after The Burning . Among them are Night Lillies (flowers with an odd blue-green glow that only open and glow at night), Lightcap Mushrooms (poisonous phosphorescent mushrooms with a white-yellow glow, only deadly if eaten), Muck Moss (a soft gray-green moss that grows underwater), and Fire Fruit (a citrus fruit with a dull, red glow, which is safe to eat, but changes the color of Seawings glow scales for a short time).
• After The Burning, some Nightwings have developed star scales that actually glow, however this is EXTREMELY rare.
• Moonblind is a strange illness that happens when a dragon spends too much time under two or more full moons. They take on a blank stare, gazing at the moons and keening lowly. It usually stops in the morning, but will resurface every time there’s two full moons.
• Some families believe that the individual tribes should be kept as much as possible, and dislike inter-tribe relationships. These are the minority, and are often ignored.
• Silkwings now have mixtures of all scale colors, including black.
• After The Burning, some Sandwings and Rainwings venom barbs and fangs have began to “leak”, rotting the tails and faces of the dragons.
• The Council is made up of the oldest dragons who survived The Burning.
• If a dragon is a hybrid, they would often refer to themselves as either the tribe they’re more comfortable with, or the tribe they display the most physical features of.
• The Burning affected Pantala as well as Pyrrhia.
• This Burning destroyed the landscape, and acted like radiation poisoning. It’s believed to have been caused by an Animus, but there’s no definitive cause right now.
• Most of the air is filled with a constant, smokey haze. This only clears up higher up in the air and in the mountains, making hunting and growing food very difficult. As a result, many dragons have respiratory problems.
• Princesses ascend to the throne due to three reasons- the queen deeming them ready, the queen retiring, or the queen dying due to natural causes or an accident/illness. There is no more fighting for the throne.
• Monarchies are becoming rather rare now, because so many dragons are hybrids. The notable remaining ones are IceWings, SeaWings and BlossomWings. RainWings and NightWings still share the same queen, due to how normal this had become over the years.
• While queens still hold a great deal of power, they aren’t allowed to make large decisions regarding their tribe without speaking with their Council. This was taken from Queen Coral’s form of ruling, and quickly became the standard.
• Rather than queens ruling over a whole kingdom, they rule over their palace and a great deal of land around them. Kingdoms don’t touch border-to-border anymore.
• For cities like Possibility and Sanctuary, they’re governed by council-members who are elected into positions.
• Many of these cities are surrounded by walls, but some are open, acting more like farming communities than cities.
• Due to different hybrids, there’s quite a lot of blended cultures. Many cities with high NightWing populations will have Two-Moon festivals, which are held every time there’s two full moons at once.
• Most farming cities have high MudWing, RainWing and NightWing populations. RainWings are known for growing several different fruits and berries, many of which are prized in city markets.
• IceWings still have different circles, but are far less strict than they used to be. It’s much easier for IceWings to climb the ranks, even after they’ve reached adulthood.
• Before The Burning, there was some debate on adding another tribe. Due to many SandWing and IceWing hybrids, several IceWings have been born without their characteristic spikes, instead having a soft, almost feathery ruff down their back. These dragons were called SnowWings.
