Reposting this because it's that time again. Forcing a child to disclose their autism diagnosis to everyone around them because their parent is worried about other people's reaction to them not behaving a specific way is unfair to the child. It could do more harm than good. If someone asks why your child is behaving in a way they weren't expect then just explain the situation to them. There's no need to announce to the whole neighbourhood that your child is autistic. Secondly, the colour blue was chosen to represent autism because it's more often diagnosed in boys, so autism became seen as something that only effects boys. This is because so often when diagnosing autism a lot of doctors will only focus on traits that are more common in boys, so those of us who aren't boys get undiagnosed, or misdiagnosed. We need to move away from "autism=boy. Boy=blue. Therefore blue=autism." Also, people often mistake the blue bucket for the teal bucket, or vice versa. Teal buckets are for children with food allergies, so people will give them things like toys instead of candy. It's important that people notice the teal buckets and not mistake them for anything else. Also, if you're autistic child is expecting candy, and ends up with a bunch of toys they didn't want I don't think they're going to be very happy. In the end it would just be better if the blue bucket stopped representing autism. It was a bad idea to begin with. Of course it was started by people who aren't even autistic, so it's not like autistic opinions on the matter were ever asked for during it's creation. Many of us have been giving our opinions since though, and many of us dislike it.
