Mary Oliver, "To Be Human Is to Sing Your Own Song." Blue Horses
WHAT I CAN DO
The television has two instruments that control it.
I get confused.
The washer asks me, do you want regular or delicate?
Honestly, I just want clean.
Everything is like that.
I won't even mention cell phones.
I can turn on the light of the lamp beside my chair
where abook is waiting, but that's about it.
Oh yes, and I can strike a match and make fire.

the whole business of what’s reality and what isn’t has never been solved and probably never will be. so i don’t care to be too definite about anything. i have a lot of edges called Perhaps and almost nothing you can call Certainty.
"What Gorgeous Thing"
Mary Oliver
—how wonderful to be who I am, made out of earth and water, my own thoughts, my own fingerprints— all that glorious, temporary stuff.

ANGELS
You might see an angel anytime
and anywhere. Of course you have
to open your eyes to a kind of
second level, but it's not really
hard. The whole business of
what's reality and what isn't has
never been solved and probably
never will be. So I don't care to
be too definite about anything.
I have a lot of edges called Perhaps
and almost nothing you can call
Certainty. For myself, but not
for other people. That's a place
you just can't get into, not
entirely anyway, other people's
heads.
I'll just leave you with this
I don't care how many angels can
dance on the head of a pin. It's
enough to know that for some people
they exist, and that they dance.
“Maybe the desire to make something beautiful is the piece of God that is inside each of us.”
From “Franz Marc’s Blue Horses” by Mary Oliver
Do you need a little darkness to get you going?
I know, you never intended to be in this world. But you’re in it all the same. So why not get started immediately. I mean, belonging to it. There is so much to admire, to weep over. And to write music or poems about. Bless the feet that take you to and fro. Bless the eyes and the listening ears. Bless the tongue, the marvel of taste. Bless touching. You could live a hundred years, it’s happened. Or not. I am speaking from the fortunate platform of many years, none of which, I think, I ever wasted. Do you need a prod? Do you need a little darkness to get you going? Let me be as urgent as a knife, then, and remind you of Keats, so single of purpose and thinking, for a while, he had a lifetime.”
