Robert montague renfield is a poor little meow meow. But he is also an unhinged man who has been caught between two worlds. He wants to find his softness, but he is also the person who punches heads off of bodies. It is the separation from violence that allows him to become newly horrified by it when the people who he cares about are subjected to it, but there is also familiarity with the feeling of blood on his hands. This is a man who takes the teeth out of his own personal monster and punches it in the face with a smile. He has always had strength given to him by something else and he CRAVES it because he believes he is weak. That is why Dracula was able to ensnare him. That’s why it’s easy to make him a pathetic wet cat of a man- because that’s how he sees himself. But he’s not just the servant, and he’s not just the new joy of fresh paint, he is also bloody strength. We don’t quite get to see the melding of these into a recovered and independent robert montague renfield, but we see its potential
