While rewriting an action scene, I let something slip!
Fight scenes are hard to write, at least for me. I’m honestly not that interested in them. The exchanging of punches and kicks only really becomes fun when it is symbolic of a different struggle altogether.
In my Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon fanfic, I spend a lot of time writing about characters and their relationships. I find this complex interplay infinitely more interesting.
Still, it’s Sailor Moon. The ladies have got to henshin and kick some butt. It’s in the DNA of the story. I’ve made this work for myself by giving those fights emotional heft, internal struggles, and symbolism.
This brings me to Act 7 - Push, which features one of the biggest and most complex fight scenes in the story so far. Twice I’ve already scrapped over half of the fight and re-written it from scratch. Something was missing. Today, I found it.
There’s been a quiet secret brewing in the background all the way since Act 1, a twist on the story that goes to the very heart of my take on the Black Moon arc. The hints have been so subtle, most readers haven’t even picked up on them.
I thought this secret would hang over most of the season, but I was wrong. As I was revising the final fight of Act 7 yet again, two characters faced off in a crowded parking lot for the fate of one little girl…and one of them says three little words that change everything.
It feels right. It has to happen now. I can’t take it back.
Well…there goes my outline…
