milli’s smoking.

she cuts a lovely figure, leaning rakish and blue in the light. the cigarette she’d offered to broun is unlit and still in their hand, even though the lighter is in the other.

glory people always put them on edge. they’re ghosts of an apostolos that died in fire and died again in ashes and rose even worse. they’re brighter for not knowing it, older and younger at once.

broun knows why their new benefactor chose the ancient apokine— cas carries them like weight. a reminder of grace, maybe, an elegance at odds with the loom of the stel. the ghost of a veteran over cas as they fight a new war.

but vervain— they must have been like a firework.

milli exhales. smoke drifts first from her mouth, then from the gills under her chin. broun disguises a wince— theirs could never do that.
