16. things you said with no space between us
“We should probably get out of bed,” Bruce says into Matt’s neck, his eyes still closed and his arms holding Matt flush against his chest.
Matt, who has been awake for half an hour browsing the internet on his phone, says, “Yep.”
“Yeah...” Bruce shifts, licks his lips, pulls Matt even closer somehow. Doesn’t open his eyes as he says, “We really should get up and make some breakfast.”
Matt taps his phone. “You’re right.”
There’s a calm silence that settles over them where Matt feels Bruce’s even breath against his neck, its rhythm calming him. The sunlight streams through the windows in his room, highlighting the way Bruce’s arms are wrapped around him, his skin contrasting with Matt’s dark shirt.
Bruce sighs, the action of it tickling down Matt’s spine. Bruce speaks in a sleep-soft voice, “It’s like 8 in the morning, right?”
Matt checks the time on his phone. “It’s 10.”
Bruce sighs, drops an absentminded kiss onto the back of Matt’s neck. “Close enough. We should get up, anyway.”
Matt nods. “We should.”
Bruce makes a noise. He lets go of Matt’s torso enough to shift onto his back, to give the illusion of productivity.
As Matt sits up in the bed, about to ask Bruce what he wants for breakfast, he hears Bruce snoring.
Matt smiles to himself and resolves to make the both of them omelettes.
Today though. Today Matt wakes up naturally, without an alarm at 10 in the morning. At first he panics because his alarm didn’t go off. Then he panics because Bruce isn’t in bed with him–
He rolls over and looks at the clock, trying to discern how late he slept. A blue post it pasted on the clock face catches his attention instead. It’s from Bruce. He recognizes the handwriting.
Matt sits up in the bed, and stretches, reaches over and plucks the note off. It is 10:47 am. The note reads, Enjoy your Sunday. Sleep in. You deserve it.
Matt smiles at the note. He yawns and pads over to the kitchen.
In the kitchen, he finds the sunlight streaming through the window, his kettle filled and on the stove, and another note on the door of the microwave.
It reads:
Made you breakfast. I love you.
- Bruce
Matt smiles even wider at that. (Bruce made pancakes and he even put a tea bag into Matt’s favorite mug. How the hell did Matt get so lucky?) He feels warm and comfortable as he sits down for breakfast, turning on the Sunday morning cartoons.
