So instead of getting a season building towards endgames that have supposedly been building for 14 seasons, we instead get to watch everyone start over in their character arcs? It’s almost like the writers really didn’t have any ideas for season 15 so they just decided to start over.
Imo, there never was an endgame in Dabb’s era. The constant erasure of story lines and myth arcs were always his signature. Not to mention the lack of continuity. It didn’t help matters that it seemed that everybody was writing their own story on separate rooms, bucklemming with their pet project Lucy, Bobo with his baiting ways, and some like Yockey, trying to make the effort to make something coherent out of all the mess. As a showrunner Dabb should’ve put his foot down and organize all the different egos playing a part, even his own and Singer’s. Never happened.
That’s why, again imo, we arrive at the last season when they are pulling the “it was a dream” trope or something similar (I have talked about this trope and more in some of my rants). It’s the only way they have to say: “look the only thing important here it’s not what came before, but this last season, forget about anything and everything, because it maybe was a lie!”
They never had a clear path: the alt universe, the alt. people, michael, lucy, Jack, Mary, and even Cas with the empty, they all had background stories that didn’t went really anywhere (well we still have the possibility of Cas going out to the empty lbh it’s an easy way to take him off the equation to have the final bros fest, but that is for another rant).
That the main characters are going to doubt 14 years of core story line, is a mess that spn doesn’t have the time to untangle in its last season. Of course this kind of writing is going to lead to poor pacing, rushed story lines and loose ends. That’s how I have been seeing it since Dabb took over and that’s one of the many reasons why I have been so critical with his work.
But beyond my annoyance with spn, I have to admit that it’s sad af that a show with SO much potential ends in such a low note, with people at the helm that never really respected what came before they arrived.
