They’d been lucky; for once, fate had given them a lifeline and Cole isn’t about to curse the blind luck. The Hideout had been on the brink, the toxicity of the air choking its residents to the point of evacuation from all the affected areas; exposure to the world beyond what they were so accustomed to; solitude. That’s the closest humanity can ever really see it for, a private isolation crafted from light magic that they possessed through dark means. Yet, it didn’t save them then and it was by something else that he was walking on a solo mission - underneath the permissions of the Commander and without enough decency to let anyone know of his whereabouts.
Post-chaos; after all the darkness had brought and the damage it had wreaked, Kayson wants something other than training grounds to empty bullets, to bury knives and to reap vengeance for another unexplained nightmare. He’ll deny he’s been drinking - that he didn’t break his control and slip to liquor three aged whiskeys ago and that he’s not using it as liquid courage to wander aimlessly for anything to kill. To make himself feel all that much better about how powerless he’d been to help the residents of the Hideout; that every breath they’d taken was one more closer to oblivion; that each footstep they ran, they could be barrelling into the unknown.
They hadn’t been prepared. Cole hadn’t been prepared.
And for the first time in what felt like his lifetime, they’d been lucky something other than themselves had factored into bringing it to an end - at least, the darkness, everything else; where humans sat on the totem pole, that much stayed the same.
Even when the world isn’t shrouded in dark mist and Cole’s fighting through invisible forces that his vision strains to see, he struggles to pinpoint the details of the ruins, feet thumping over broken bricks; fallen rubble of monuments that are lost to time crunch beneath combats. Cole’s fingers are wound around a gun, it’s too familiar; an extension of his arm that reminds him that he could be naked without it. He’s got blades strapped to his hips and whilst he’s prowling as a predator in amongst the stone - half cut and a little awry, he knows ho very easily a man can become prey.
The same kind of thoughts that yank strings in his mind to harshly grind rationality to a halt, bury all sane thoughts and let flashes of red shroud his vision; he stumbles, surprised at how fast a memory catches up on him, that the sound of gunfire; a war against unfavourable odds forever a plague; and it’s not the time to let it swallow him beneath the rubble here.
Because he swears he just saw a shadow move in the distance, can almost catch the flickering of light twisting to form shapes that were never there before. Cole knows that as much as that could be real - it also might not be; choking on the idea that he’s let himself slip; those whiskeys’ those thoughts; those dangerous things that can prowl in ruins and bring another kind of place crumbling down. Kayson’s half frozen, feet stopping to survey what he could have missed, eyes forcibly pushing through the dark, the moonlight illuminated through fog and mist that broken stone roofs penetrate. He won’t say a word; because if he’s wrong and it’s real, where most creatures of the night would know he’s there; others, rogue humans may not.
If he’s right; his silence only serves as time to gather thoughts, tighten finger on trigger and slowly, reach around so he could slowly begin to unsheathe a blade. There’s that shadowed movement again. It’s so fleeting, easily manifested by drunk eyes and Kayson’s doing his best to maintain a steady heartbeat, the pounding of his own blood travelling at speed around his body; homeostasis an unavoidable bodily function; it’s both fighting the cold, tempering his spike in awareness, an adrenaline surge blinking where he’s not certain there’s anything there at all.
What he is certain of: where he wasn’t prepared before, he’s determined he will be this time.
