7. What fic are you the proudest of?

Break Me Like A Pattern.

Somehow, between 2021-22, I put out this 215k behemoth of a book, which - having read it back (a few times now) - still holds up to scrutiny. I wrote it off-the-cuff, a chapter at a time, keeping most of the plot in my head, but it didn’t fall apart. I've made friends across continents through this fic and that's beautiful.

And now I'm working on its sequel and I really, really hope it lives up to the first one.

30. Is there something you would go back and change about a fic if you could?

I do occasionally go back and fix typos when I spot them, but I avoid making any noticeable changes to my work beyond that.

If I were to go back and redo something more significant, it would be around the midpoint of Break Me Like A Pattern, because I realised - after I'd finished - that a few chapters took place in areas of London that were affected by the London Riots in 2011 (when the fic is set).

Nobody's said anything about it, and it wouldn't - I don't think - have a major impact on the plot, but it's a detail I think is culturally important.

31. How do you stay motivated?

Sometimes it's a real struggle, but honestly, I don't think there's a future for me where I don't write. This is just something I do, and always have. So on the grand scale I'm never not motivated.

But in immediate terms, it can be harder to keep myself on task - especially with a longer WIP, and working around my chronic health issues. I try to remind myself why I love the specific story I'm telling, let myself indulge in daydreams and - if a scene is being difficult - I think about alternative angles I could approach it from that will make it more enjoyable. I also listen to songs that remind me of my WIP before I sit down to write, to get me in the mood. Reading back through lovely comments on my work also helps.
