The entrance to Fatehpuri Mosque in Delhi. This mosque, built in 1650, by Fatehpuri Begum, one of the wives of Shah Jahan. It lies at one end of Chandni Chowk and is in direct line of view of Red Fort. In 1857, after the Mutiny, it was auctioned to Rai Lala Chunnamal for Rs 19,000... In 1877, the government re-acquired the mosque that the Lala had preserved. This one is the Bada Darwaaza or "Big Gate/Door", and forms the main entrance to the Purana Qila. Some people say that this is also Pandava ka Qila, or the Fort of the mythical Pandava brothers. They founded the mythical Indraprastha City. What you see in the picture, is the tomb of a lady called Maham Anga, who died in 1562. She was the chief nurse of the Mughal King, Akbar The Great. The old woman sitting in the courtyard looked at me with a great deal of suspicion, as I wandered around. One of the other interesting spots at Feroz Shah Kotla, is the Jami Masjid. It is an old mosque and still very much in use. Timur.. or Tamarlane.. visited the mosque in 1398 to pray, and when he constructed a mosque in Samarkand, he adapted the design of the Jami Masjid. One of the sights that is definitely worth seeing at the Feroz Shah Kotla is the Ashoka Pillar. This is one of the pillars of Ashoka the Great, and is about 2,500 ( or more ) years old It is said that the King, Feroz Shah Tughlak personally supervised the transport and the erection of the pillar in his fort, to ensure that it was not damaged at all. Two views of the Khirkee Mosque. This is fairly close to the arches of Jahanpanah, but was built during the time of Firoz Shah Tughlak. It was built by his Prime Minister Khan-i-Jahan Junan Shah. The name was a bit of a mouthful! Khirkee means "window"... Anyway, Firoz Shah Tughlak and his Prime Minister were great builders.. After Firoz Shah Tughlak, the Dynasty declined.
