I couple character challenges I was given to work on characters in Splatoon based music groups.
First off, I was given the challenge to come up with my envisioning of the Splatoon 1 musician, Bob Dub (or Cala Marley in Japan). A brief note real quick, but Bob Dub’s name in the English version of Splatoon is a combination of Dubstep (or Dub as it is colloquially known as), a form of music that has its roots in Jamaica as a branch off of the traditional Reggaeton (or Reggae for short), and Bob Marley (evident in both English and Japanese versions), a well known reggae singer from the 1960’s. My challenge was to give them a character, an identity to match their sound and origins. After researching the character a bit, researching species of squid endemic to the Caribbean region (including Jamaica), traditional music styles, outfits and the character’s inspirational sound profile, I concluded the character would be based off the Caribbean Reef Squid and would possibly wear clothing from that region. Seeing as their music is based off of Dub, they would more than likely be a DJ of sorts.
Secondly, my next challenge was to bring Squid Squad’s Drummer a bit of personality, since we primarily don’t see any art of them performing. I imagine the character would be very active and fun-loving (to counteract the more serious tone of his fellow band mates).
