Major Bob Gaines is a US Air Force astronaut, about to be sent up into space for the longest amount of time in history.
Helen Gaines is his wife, supportive and grounded while raising their daughter Maggie and worrying about Bob’s flights.
Bob’s spaceflight is troubled, but he lands back on Earth with ease, reporting to his superiors and returning home to Helen and Maggie. However, Bob soon begins to realize that something inexplicable is amiss, something that Helen senses as well. After seeking psychiatric help and consulting with a fellow astronaut, Bob becomes convinced that the phenomenon has been caused by him crossing over into a parallel world - one that is almost identical to his own save for a few minor details. His fear is realized as he struggles to return to his own home and family before it is too late, terrified beyond words that the Helen he is living with is not the same Helen he married.
