Subject: MISSING HAIR GOODS

Gene:

If you haven't already heard about it, we are missing some wigs and hair pieces.

Bill Shatner borrowed all four of his hair pieces when we finished shooting. There are two new ones and two old ones. The new ones are worth approximately $200.00 apiece and the two old ones are worth approximately $100.00 apiece. Should "STAR TREK" go again next season, this no doubt means that we will have to construct new hair pieces again for Bill because he will have used both the old ones and the new ones to such an extent that they will not be photographable. This I guarantee, since it has happened to us before.

Majel Barrett's wig has disappeared. Nobody, including Majel, knows what has happened to it.

Nichelle Nichols wig has disappeared. She borrowed it when she finished working and claims that she returned it, but neither Freddie nor Pat Westmore know anything about it being returned.

That takes us up to here on missing hair goods.

Here’s another photo from when De, James Doohan, Gene Roddenberry and some of the production staff visited NASA in 1967.

I like this photo as it puts faces to the names we’ve seen in the Star Trek series end credits.

De is referred to using his real first name (Jackson). I’ve never seen him referred to professionally as Jackson. The photo also calls out James Doohan’s and some of the other’s middle names. Maybe they had to use their full names when getting clearance into the NASA facility and then NASA used those names in their press release. I’m thinking too much about all of this, but I obviously enjoy obsessing on DeForest.

STORY PREMISE

"JOANNA" by D.C. Fontana

Dear Gene:

I think there is a good premise contained within these few pages.

I think there are some areas opened up, however, that will need careful examination. I think it is well worth getting this property into work. It seems to have certain dramatic elements that would be useful in a "STAR TREK" and also it would appear that it would turn out to be an eminently suitable vehicle for displaying the talents of DeForest Kelley.

Areas to be discussed are:

Why does our "usually amiable Doctor" turn into a "fiercely protective father" when he sees that Kirk and Joanna are drawn to each other? Does he know that Captain Kirk is a libertine, or does he have the knowledge (due to the fact that he is the Ranking Physician on board) that Captain Kirk has contracted an incurable social disease? On the other hand, if Dr. McCoy has subconsciously repressed desire for his own daughter, we may be opening up a can of poss that would take some pretty delicate writing to handle.

Another area that will seriously need examination is the area of Joanna's anger against her father. I agree. Where has Dr. McCoy been all her life?

This premise should develop into a fine story. That fine story should be developed into a superior teleplay. It's going to take a lot of hard work and a lot of soul-searching for Dorothy to bring it to fruition. But I think it's worth the effort.

"JOANNA"

TEASER

LT. UHURA has picked up a distress call from a small planet where a tiny group of travellers has been stranded. Coordinates are locked on; and the bunch of six is beamed up to where KIRK, SPOCK, and MCCOY are waiting in the Transporter Room. The group materializing is bizarre -- 23rd Century Flower Children. Their dress, hairstyle, everything about them is totally removed from the orderliness of our Star Fleet personnel -- and in a way, almost alien. The lovely young girl to one side of the group (could be played by someone like Bobbi Gentry or Nancy Sinatra) looks over the three Enterprise officers, smiles cheerfully, and advances toward McCoy. "Hi, Dad," she says.

Spock asks cautiously if that is not an archaic slang greeting. McCoy replies tartly it is not. "This is my daughter -- Joanna."

END OF TEASER

ACT ONE

The leader of this small band is a young man named SEVRIN. All are members of that lonely coordinated Earth group called "The Artists". (One of them could be Tiny Tim.) An outgrowth and projection of today's hippy/flower child philosophy, these young people are (at least vocally) devoted to peace and brotherhood and pursuit of art forms, the expression of which is as beyond STAR TREK's level as today's hip art is beyond ours. (NOTE: they are not dirty, no drugs or hallucinogenics, no mention of "hippies" will be made in reference to

Yellow cover script "JOURNEY TO BABEL" by D. C. Fontana (dated: 8-22-67)

Gene:

Actual script pages in this total 70-3/8. There are three pages in the Teaser, 20-3/4 pages in the First Act, 16 ½ pages in the Second Act, 14-5/8 in the Third Act and 15-h/8 pages in the Fourth Act.

With respect to the makeup-costume note contained in the script, I would like to differ with the author, if I may. Since this voyage is essentially a diplomatic voyage, I think that the Vulcans on board ought to wear ceremonial dress as depicted in "AMOK TIME". My reasons for this are twofold: firstly, we cannot afford to build a whole new set of costumes for the Vulcans in this show; secondly, we don't have enough money to build the costumes. And since we already have costumes left over from "AMOK TIME", we should use them for the purpose of saving money and also audience recognition. Besides, Vulcan has no moon!

I have found a number of line trims as I went through the script which I do not want to take the time to include in this memo. No doubt we can discuss this when we next get together. We can also discuss my grammar.

I think that all of Scene 6 can be deleted and we can play the one line of dialogue inside Spock's Quarters.

I suggest that Mr. Spock would know that his mother and Sarek would be attending the dinner that evening. Therefore, I think he would say something about looking forward to seeing them both "after dinner tonight". My reasons for this slight change are clever. We can save a complete redress on a set and also get a less static scene, if we do not play Scenes 11 through 13 in a "Dining Room". A Dining Room would also call for our construction of a new table and also serving people, which does bother me to some extent. We can get the same sequence and a lot better looking sequences by playing it in the Recreation Room, where everyone is having cocktails after dinner. Therefore, no one really needs to be seated. We can get some movement from various Extras and Principals contained within this room and we can get a fluid scene, as opposed to a static scene.

I suggest that we delete Spock's first speech and the following para-

STORY OUTLINE

"CATSPAW"

Dear Gene:

Although I find many problems within this Story Outline, I feel that they're all exceeded in importance by one enormous error. It has always been our intention that the "STAR TREK" Series be an "action-adventure" show. This story departs radically from that direction in that we have a "supernatural-fantasy" story.

Although I am certain that a story of this type can be thrilling and chilling, I feel that it has a more logical place in a show such as "ONE STEP BEYOND" or "THE TWILIGHT ZONE", both of which, unfortunately, have been out of production for some time now.

Should both NBC and you surprise me and decide that this would be an eminently suitable project for "STAR TREK" this season, then I am prepared to give you specific criticism on the various aspects contained within the Treatment.
