Comrades, friends, and family gathered in San Diego Nov. 8 to honor the life of Bob McCubbin, a lifelong revolutionary who dedicated over 60 years to the struggle for socialism and liberation. Bob died on Aug. 20, 2025, at age 83, from injuries sustained when he was struck by a car while taking his daily walk through Balboa Park.

Bob McCubbin was a pioneering theorist of LGBTQ liberation, author of the groundbreaking 1976 work “The Gay Question: A Marxist Appraisal,” and a tireless organizer who built branches of revolutionary organization with nothing but knowledge, passion, and commitment.

From the Stonewall era through his final days organizing at San Diego Pride 2025, Bob never wavered in his belief that queer liberation was inseparable from the fight against capitalism and imperialism.

Gregory Williams:  So, after Stonewall, you came to a point where you felt you needed to come out. What was it like when you came out as a member of a revolutionary party? Was it difficult?

Bob McCubbin: I would say it didn’t change anything. What do I mean by that? I was already in the party, and Sam Marcy characterized the party as a combat organization. And within the world that we were living in at that time, a world with incredibly inspiring anti-colonial struggles and everything else progressive that was going on – and again, being in what Sam Marcy characterized as a combat organization – there was a lot of discipline, but it was self-discipline.

Let me try to describe the San Francisco Gay Liberation Front. We met once a week to discuss activities. One of the Gay Liberation Front organization’s tasks was to join the struggle – struggle for their own rights and the struggle for the rights of their siblings, while also struggling for other members of their class. And we did. 

I remember making a banner to free Angela Davis and Ruchell McGee, and we took it, as the Gay Liberation Front, to the following rally. And we’re talking the Bay Area, San Francisco Bay Area. So we were activists, no question about it.

Help send a LGBTQ+ delegation to Cuba

A message from Bob McCubbin

We are asking for your help to send an important LGBTQ+ delegation to Cuba this May to learn about the inclusive new Families Code and the impact of the U.S. blockade.

We’re all aware of the terrible attacks on the LGBTQ+ community in the United States, especially targeting our transgender and Two Spirit siblings. People’s rights to life-saving gender-affirming healthcare, and even to exist in public, are being legislated away in state after state. Queer spaces are besieged by right-wing mobs, including in cities like New York and San Francisco that were considered safe. Truly, we need to revive the spirit of Stonewall.

All the more remarkable, then, is Cuba’s incredible leap forward in LGBTQ+ rights with the passage of its new Families Code last year. Not only same-sex marriage, but equality of queer families before the law, equal standing for chosen families with biological families, parent-child relations based on rights and responsibilities, and mandated education promoting acceptance, support and full rights for all people – all this just 90 miles from Ron DeSantis’s Florida!

In Minnie Bruce Pratt, Leslie Feinberg found the profound sensitivity, understanding, and love that had always been elusive in her previous relationships. And Minnie Bruce was herself a courageous fighter, had always been a fighter, had fought the homophobic, transphobic, racist state that took her children from her to punish her for her audacity in coming out publicly at a time and place when and where it was simply outrageous and unacceptable to do so. From the point of view of the racist Southern establishment, she must be punished for being a proud lesbian, a fiercely anti-racist activist, and an outspoken opponent of imperialist war.
