In 1987-88 Bob Probert led the NHL with 398 penalty minutes. He died of heart failure on Lake St Clair in July of 2010. His family donated his brain to concussion research and he was found to have suffered CTE. His ashes were spread in the Detroit Red Wings penalty box prior to the closing of the Joe Louis arena.
