Ghost Adventures part 2

So I already did a post on the Ghost Adventures episode on Bobby Mackeys, and it turns out they went back in season 4 to shoot another episode. By now I feel the need to keep criticizing these shows, since I put in so many hours researching the nightclub and Pearl Bryan.

HOLY SHIT THIS BRO IS CLAIMING THE FIRST HUNT HE DID AT BOBBY MACKEYS WAS A BIG FACTOR IN HIS DIVORCE. HOLY SHIT.

So a detail I find funny is that in Bobby Mackeys song 'Johanna', he sets the scene as being in the 1930s, and Zak Bagans always says that the version of the nightclub she worked at was the Latin Quarter. Jokes on him, the Latin Quarter wasn't established until 1947. The building was known as The Primrose club in the 1930s.

"What we've discovered in our experiences is when you go into an abandoned building, thats been sitting there for 10, 20, 30 years, the spirits, the ghosts, they've taken ownership of that building."

"This building was abandoned until Bobby Mackey discovered it."

So the building had not sat abandoned for more than a few years between business ventures. Before Bobby Mackey's opened in 1978 it was known as the Hard Rock Cafe (likely not part of the famous chain of restaurants), and there were only a few weeks between the Cafe closing and Mackey's opening. Before it was the Cafe it was the Latin Quarter, and I found a newspaper suggesting that the Latin Quarter stayed in operation until at least 1970. I couldn't find an opening date for the Hard Rock, but articles suggested it was open for a number of years. The building has not sat abandoned for more than a decade for the past hundred years. I doubt it was abandoned for more than a year or two.

"Confirmed devil worshiper Scott Jackson decapitated his pregnant girlfriend Pearl Bryan right here in this basement as a blood sacrifice to the devil."

NO! NO NO NO NO NO! WRONG! Pearl Bryan was murdered at the intersection of the Alexandria Pike and Highland Ave, several miles away! It's confirmed it happened there because she was found in a large pool of blood that formed when her head was cut off when she was still living, several doctors confirmed it, and I would say modern doctors would agree. And also SCOTT JACKSON WAS NOT A FUCKING SATANIST. HE WAS AN ASSHOLE WHO MURDERED HIS PREGNANT GIRLFRIEND BECAUSE HE WANTED SEX BUT NOT A BABY FROM HER.

This is why you do your own research people. You can enjoy the TV show or movie all you want, but if you really want to know history you have to find real sources for the answers.

Ghosts at Bobby Mackey

Bryan (often a headless figure), Walling and Jackson reportedly have been seen on numerous occasions at Bobby Mackey’s over the years, along with other spirits whose lives were entangled with the building in some way. In fact, several people have died unnatural deaths inside the building, which was alleged to be the site of several murders at the casino. During the 1950s, it became the Latin Quarter, another popular nightclub whose owners were arrested several times on gambling charges.

Later, the building became yet another rough-and-tumble nightclub, The Hard Rock Cafe (no relation to the restaurant chain), which was closed in 1978 by police request after several fatal shootings on the premises. Bobby Mackey purchased the building in 1978 and opened his Music World shortly thereafter.

One of the most frequently seen spirits is a young girl named Johana, a cabaret dancer during the club’s casino days, who reportedly poisoned herself and her mobster father inside the building after he murdered her boyfriend, club singer Robert Randall. Other spirits who have appeared at the club regularly are Johana and gangster Albert “Red” Masterson.

According to sworn affidavits, other witnesses and local legend, paranormal activity in the club is often preceded by the strong smell of rose perfume. The juke box at Bobby Mackey’s also has come on suddenly and played old tunes from the 1930s and 1940s – songs that were not loaded into the juke box! “The Anniversary Waltz” is a particular favorite, heard numerous times by many people.

Chairs have moved inexplicably, rooms have gone cold and people have heard their names called, only to turn around and have no one there in the club.

Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of the Bobby Mackey’s saga are the claims by several people that they have had spirits enter their bodies while in the club. Some of the sworn affidavits claim they felt cold chills run through their bodies, while others claimed to have taken on different personalities and even facial features while inside.

The most celebrated case of possession at Bobby Mackey’s is Carl Lawson, who lived upstairs above the nightclub as a caretaker for the club. Lawson, one of the main subjects of Hensley’s book, claims to have been attacked by several of the resident spirits and actually possessed by some of them as well, including Alonzo Walling. A supposedly successful exorcism of Lawson and the entire building took place at Bobby Mackey’s on August 8, 1991. It was performed by the Reverend Glenn Coe and witnessed by Hensley, who also recorded it all on videotape.

For a time, it appeared that the exorcism was successful, but in recent years, strange occurrences have begun once again at the old building. Bobby Mackey, who has refused to believe the paranormal activity was true from the beginning, nevertheless made plans to tear down the building and construct a new club on adjacent property after viewing the videotape of the Carl Lawson exorcism. However, a piece of the ceiling fell on him one day when he was discussing the demolition, and the adjacent property he purchased for the new club was rendered useless by the sudden appearance of a fissure about six inches wide and 60 feet deep that runs from the old slaughterhouse well to the middle of the adjacent property.

Mackey has never built the new club, and he continues to operate at his original club where he regularly performs a special song he wrote, “The Ballad of Johana.”

Bobby Mackey’s Music World is a haunted nightclub found in Wilder Kentucky. In 1850 Bobby Mackey’s Music World was once a slaughterhouse and once it closed in the 1890′s people believe a cult started meeting there. In 1896 a girl’s headless corpse who was later identified as Pearl Bryan was discovered in a field 2 miles from the former slaughterhouse. Pearl was pregnant and her boyfriend Scott Jackson and his friend Alonzo Walling attempted to give her an abortion however something went wrong so they dumped her body in a field and decapitated her. Eventually the two were caught due to them leaving the shoes on the body which made her identifiable to the authorities; the two were sentenced to death and Alonzo Walling right before his death said that he would haunt the area forever. In the 1950′s a girl named Johanna fell in love with a singer named Robert Randall; eventually Johanna got pregnant and wanted to run away with him however her father forbade and had the singer killed; Johanna was so upset she poisoned her father then killed herself in the basement and she is said to haunt the building to this day with the smell of her rose scented perfume and Bobby Mackey even wrote a song about her called “Johanna”. Bobby Mackey eventually bought the building in 1978. People believe that the nightclub has a portal to hell in its basement. The headless ghost of Pearl Bryan and Alonzo Walling are also said to haunt the nightclub. Possessions and exorcisms have taken place there and one night the club’s manager was closing for the night and the jukebox started playing the Anniversary Waltz even though it was unplugged and did not have the song listed. Ghost Adventures did an investigation here.

Drawing Bobby Mackey’s

I knew drawing Vol 1 of Dusk would be challenging due to having to draw Bobby Mackey’s Music World over and over. I have a few tricks to save time, but I started this comic to get into the details, and that includes in the drawings.

This one panel took me an ungodly amount of time to draw, but its an important establishing shot. Most photos you find of the front of the building are taken at this angle so it looks familiar to those who know this case.

I stole two panels from Buzzfeed Unsolved’s episode of Bobby Mackey’s as i really like the shots. There's not a whole lot of still pictures of this hallway so it was a helpful reference.

Another important shot I wanted in there was of the bar. The bar design is fairly unique and recognizable. After I drew this I also came across a very interesting photo on the website for the Kenton Library

This is the bar from when it was still the Latin Quarter. You can clearly tell its the same place! I was amazed when I found this.

Finally, the well room doesn't have a whole lot of detail to it, but its still interesting. You can see that the well used to be covered up and then the floor was torn open to reveal it. You can even see where the foundation sits on top of it. I wish I knew the layout of the bar so I could see which section its sitting under. That would help date when it was covered, as the bar is made of up several different buildings built together and expanded.
