Death Valley, Kevin Cooley
I'm spending the day trying to distract myself from the massive fire inching its way into our valley by painting the bathroom and blasting dj twitch streams. How about you guys? Walking on the Sun, Kyle Grillot
Super thankful for the cloud cover in the morning, eventually giving way to clear skies. A lovely wee spring bloom added lots of color to the burned slopes. Lots of herbaceous cover as the forest continues to recover from the Bobcat Fire. The bears are active! #bobcatfire #postburn #vantasselmotorway #silverfishtrucktrail #whitesaddle #mtbliss #trtp #nostalgia #looproadl #angelesnationalforest #anf #sangabrielmountains #springbloom #wildflowers #hike #hiking #hikinglife #hikingadventures #canyon #nature #naturelover #naturephotography #landscape #landscapephotography #thegreatoutdoors #optoutside #goodday #findyourpark #findyourhike #goodhike (at Van Tassel Trail (Duarte)) https://www.instagram.com/p/COo6pJkgPwe/?igshid=1fckqguvvi0pr
So it turns out hiking to Mt Bliss is going to become semi-regular because I'm invested in observing the post-fire recovery. It's hard not to get bummed out by the loss. Tons of resprouts and early blooms are a positive sign. #bobcatfire #postburn #vantasselmotorway #silverfishtrucktrail #whitesaddle #mtbliss #trtp #nostalgia #looproadl #angelesnationalforest #anf #sangabrielmountains #hike #hiking #hikinglife #hikingadventures #canyon #nature #naturelover #naturephotography #landscape #landscapephotography #thegreatoutdoors #optoutside #goodday #findyourpark #findyourhike #goodhike (at Mount Bliss (Summit 3720ft)) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLBcdy6AoKQ/?igshid=1g0gvd68xuf6k
Saturday's hike offered a fascinating look at a part of the forest that burned in the bobcat fire. A part I love very much from my days on TRTP. It's a tragedy how much was lost, so much devastation. But all is not lost, I was pleased by how much survived and blown away by the feverish regrown of the toyon and scrub oak. Fire ecology at work. I can't believe I have to say this again, but I can't wait to see what the forest will look like in 2030. #bobcatfire #postburn #vantasselmotorway #silverfishtrucktrail #whitesaddle #mtbliss #trtp #nostalgia #looproadl #angelesnationalforest #anf #sangabrielmountains #hike #hiking #hikinglife #hikingadventures #canyon #nature #naturelover #naturephotography #landscape #landscapephotography #thegreatoutdoors #optoutside #goodday #findyourpark #findyourhike #goodhike (at Mount Bliss (Summit 3720ft)) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJHCMgpgadZ/?igshid=150ps1tb9r82j
Got news today that our beloved @sturtevantcamp survived the fires. They were finally able to go in and see the damage. So far we know the camp lost its water tank and One cabin. Cabin number 1. Built in 1947 and painted by my family in 2015. We were on one of the groups that volunteered to paint these beautiful cabins and clean up the place. My family went and every single one of them did their part. Helping paint, cook, clean and remove debris. It is still one of my most beloved memories. When the ash clears and it’s ok to go back we will be ready to volunteer again. Any rebuilding needs to be done we will be there. ☹️ all that is left of the bacon is ash now. Aside from this the trail that head up there at least 17 of the 80 privately owned cabins are completely gone. It’s a small little corner of the world and no one was hurt or killed but it still hurts. So much history in this place. Here’s more info about cabin 1 provided by Wilbur Sturtevant... Cabin #1 was one of six cabins built by the Methodist Church after it acquired the Camp in 1947. The bunk-house style was very practical, influenced by the military barracks style of the time (a lot of military surplus was available and used in the 50's.) The Camp was one of 8 in a system reaching from San Diego to Arizona, and the idea was Sturtevant would focus on elementary-age kids, introducing them to the outdoors and 'rustic' camping. There was also the expectation that a road would be coming through to Camp, similar to the 38 out of Azusa; the popular "Lost Bridge" between Wilson and the 38 is a remnant of that idea-- which was originally conceived by Wilbur and Louis Newcome (built the Ranger Cabin) who incorporated with a few others to build a pack trail from Sierra Madre over to the Antelope Valley: Newcomb's Pass is evidence of that failed effort. #sturtevantcamp #sturtevantfalls #sturtevantcampgrounds #bobcatfire https://www.instagram.com/p/CGaZvk6pEGz/?igshid=1n5xsjvcfo4mi
