Four hours of rain left me and Charlie drenched this morning. Nothing like putting on a dry hoodie over a soaking wet shirt 😅 Honestly I couldn't have asked for better weather. It was cold at the top though. A bit of a nostalgia tour for an old project, I hadn't visited the area in over seven years. The 2020 bobcat fire hit the area hard. So it turns out hiking to Mt Bliss is going to become semi-regular because I'm invested in observing the post-fire recovery. It's hard not to get bummed out by the loss. Saturday's hike offered a fascinating look at a part of the forest that burned in the bobcat fire. A part I love very much from my days on TRTP. It's a tragedy how much was lost, so much devastation. But all is not lost, I was pleased by how much survived and blown away by the feverish regrown of the toyon and scrub oak. Fire ecology at work. Nothing like a 20 mile hike to really test the limits! This was a major TRTP nostalgia tour: started at the bottom of the Van Tassel Motorway, which transitions to the Silver Fish Truck Trail, at White Saddle, the trail continues onto the Upper Clamshell Truck Trail, finally after 10 miles uphill, it's the intersection at the Rincon-Shortcut OHV Trail, then 10 miles back down (aka the bottom half of Loop Road L in TRTP-speak).The spring bloom was incredible. Never I seen this part of the forest so green. The butterflies and others pollinators were out in full force! Charlie hiked 20 miles!
