Old Me: Would have been mortified by this photo. I saw “fat” as a slur - something to avoid and disassociate from at all costs. I had been taught, like most people, that being fat was ugly, shameful, unquestionably unhealthy, and one of the worst things a young woman could be.
❤️🩹 Me Now: I know that “fat” is just an adjective - like tall, short, or thin. It only feels like an insult if you believe being fat is bad, and I don’t. Rejecting narrow beauty standards means rejecting the fear of fatness that upholds sexism, racism, ageism, and weight bias. Reclaiming “fat” as a neutral word is, for me, an act of unlearning, resistance, and self-acceptance.
❓What’s a word you were taught to fear that you might see differently now?
