I rewatched Bojack just the other day and one of my favorite things ever is "good damage," or rather the idea of it.

The idea of "good damage" stems from this feeling of superiority pulled from trauma. When you think you're special, you're different, you're stronger because of what you went through. That there's a purpose it all served to circle back to you.

This idea that there's inherit meaning in suffering, in pain. That there's some sort of greater cause for it to serve. That all the trauma, the abuse, the neglect, whatever it was, was good for me in some way. It's all something that rippled through the way my brain is wired. It has fundamentally ruined my life. But in the midst of hopelessness, there's this attractive voice that tells me I'm better than everyone else. For being able to endure all this pain, to handle everything I've been through, and that I have control over it, or rather what I do with it, which is what will make me better.

I remember when I was around 12, I was dead set on writing a book, a book about all the abuse I went through, because I wanted so badly to read a book at the time where someone was in the same situation I was in and it had a happy ending. I wanted to be that person to someone else, some other kid out there who so desperately needed it the way I did. The episode definitely hit very close to home because of how crazily relatable Diane is.

You end up grabbing on to this idea of change, of channeling your pain, reshaping it, for a better cause. That this served some sort of purpose, whether for you or for someone else. You hold on to your trauma to be able to fulfill this role of greater good, of finding the inherit meaning, the reason you went through all of it. That proof that you weren't cheated out of your life, your childhood, for no reason.

Letting go is undoubtedly the hardest part. Acknowledging, truly emotionally processing, the genuine lack of meaning, of purpose in all that you endured. Because it feels like a sick joke, mockery to your progress. Were you set back from the starting line simply because? With no one you could help, no meaning you could find, nothing positive you could exploit out of it. Was that it? Just damage?

Diane's middle grade fiction book wasn't her magically getting rid of all her damage, it was her realizing that writing her book of essays to prove herself a point about inherit meaning and glorification of sacrifice and trauma was only going to ruin her more. Dwelling on a nonexistent situation of superiority, or of godly meaning, was only harming her more. There are girls in her situation who may have needed that book, but she couldn't write it. Solely because she was writing it at the cost of her own growth from when she was that girl.

Suffering is inevitable. Pain is an absolute and unavoidable in life. No matter when or where it comes from, attempting to put a pyramid of your ability to exploit, to serve your pain, will never actually help you heal. There's no such thing as good damage or bad damage, because at the end of the day, you're still damaged. There's unfortunately no heavenly message or spiritual meaning embedded into your pain, sometimes life's a bitch. (nice while it lasted reference)

That person who got really defensive about their trauma, or a related subject isn't "chronically online" or "immature" they're simply traumatized. They're traumatized and frantic to justify their pain. Because it really does hurt knowing you were put behind the starting line in life and to still be expected to finish first without any explanation.
