dealing with adhd tips from your local adhd mutual
ive been meaning to make this list for a while! mostly for myself to remember what works for me, and for others who may be struggling and need some tips. some of this is bolded for your convenience for those who have a hard time reading a lot of text.
note: this is stuff that works for me, so it may not work for you and that’s okay!
caffeine can be your friend or your enemy. caffeine is something a lot of people with adhd use to self medicate, but that doesn’t mean that you go reach for the coffee or the soda. try an herbal tea instead! my favorite brand is yogi, and the teas i drink when im out of meds and having a particularly bad adhd days are perfect energy and gingko clarity.
set alarms/reminders on your phone! if you’re like me and forget to do basic tasks like eating or whatever, setting alarms on your phone will help you remember when you cant.
give yourself treats for completing tasks. one of the biggest problems adhd people have is the lack of ability to self motivate. so get a big pack of your favorite candy or whatever and treat yourself for completing a task. even if it’s supposedly ‘easy’.
allow yourself to take breaks, especially if you’re having a hard time doing whatever task you’re doing. self explanatory, but something i deal with a lot is getting frustrated for having rough patches during a task. take a break and clear your head.
exercise is good for the insomnia! even if it’s just a walk, you’ll be able to decompress and enjoy nature.
get a hands on hobby. others have discussed this more in length, but getting a hobby where you get to see the progress of it is beneficial and will help with the boredom.
make lists or progress bars! if you have a lot of stuff to do for the day, make a list. crossing out items off the list is extremely satisfying to me because i get to see the progress i’ve made and remember what i have to do. progress bars are great for long term stuff. i’m sure there’s apps out there for this, but i like making my own because it lets me do stuff with my hands.
don’t beat yourself up for hyperfocusing. we all do it! no need to be upset about it. if you’re trying to break a hyperfocus? try picking up a different hobby, or set an alarm for the amount of time you’ll allow yourself to have. for example, i’ve been hyperfocusing on stardew valley and to combat this i’ve been setting an alarm for an hour of playtime in the afternoon and at night and then force myself off afterwards. it works sometimes, other times no. but it’s all in the effort.
do things right away! if you have an appointment, set the appointment in the calendar as soon as you get the date and time. you gotta make a phone call? do it right now. procrastination is the enemy to adhd people and to others in general, but get into the habit of doing things as soon as you need to. and it IS a habit.
i hope this was helpful! of course this isn’t for everyone, but these tips have helped me when i needed it. also remember, most of these are habits, and habits take a while to develop into your routine! anyway love you all adhd peeps
