I’ve watched “Boldly Go!” (which’s, as a matter of fact, a Star Trek parody musical) and AAAAAAAA!
I don’t even know what to think of it. On the one hand, it’s unbearably awkward and sometimes VERY embarrassing. On the other hand, I had to stop the video a few times just to laugh and scream and cry (mostly cry in a good sense). They collected all Star Trek jokes and quotes they could (probably except Kirk and the salad, or I just didn’t notice that one) and put them into one show. I mean they literally had a song sang by McCoy about “I’m a doctor not a *another profession*”. I guess one the best jokes which weren’t in the series (or was it?) was when Bones told Spock: “I’m all ears” and then this happens:
And they had many classical Spock-McCoy argues, this, for example, is especially funny:
I mean – I’m not even going to retell you the plot because if something isn’t important here – it’s the plot. The jokes, the songs and the dances but not the plot. And there are romances: between Kirk and Doctor Marcus (which is pretty expectable), between Spock and a random Andorian scientist and the most unexpectable Doctor McCoy and Nurse Chapel.
Let’s go by order:
Kirk. There are a lot of jokes about him, but I guess they were a little bit too much. I mean yes, he had a lot of girlfriends in the series, but after rewatching even I’ve learned that he isn’t a womanizer. And here they showed him as an absolute arrogant self-centred… man (I wanted to write something bad but didn’t want to swear and to be honest – even in the musical, he isn’t that bad – just very exaggerated, much more than the others). Jim, you’ve torn your shirt again:
Spock. Yes – they made him have a romance and it’s very odd. He wants to do everything “Vulcan way”
but everybody’s trying to help him – Kirk gives him bad pick-up advice, Uhura and Scotty offer him to dance the tango.
Everything works out well, but during the song in which they confess love to each other, it felt so strange and uncomfortable that I bit my fist to red spots.
McCoy. Well, I can’t say anything special about him but nurse Chapel… Firstly – she’s a brunet! Secondly, who even came up with the idea that they should be in love?!
There are also some details I’d like to mention: the accents (Chekov’s and Scotty’s) aren’t very good (it’s fine, but just caught my ear), I didn’t get the Sulu thing – why did they show that he had some kind of fetish about the captain chair? I don’t remember anything like this in the series.

They even copied the Spock’s death scene from the end of “The Wrath of Khan”. They really did – and it was a song – a duet of Spock and Kirk that they are friends and that Kirk won’t let him say goodbye. And here they had me crying. Even though I knew that they would have him alive in like two minutes it was so emotional and well played and written.
What I’d like to spot as a disadvantage of that musical: it’s a musical about Star Trek, a parody, I don’t know – a fanfiction in the very sense of the word and it’s absolutely and overwhelmingly… straight. You could have done anything! I’m not even talking about Spirk (I’m not a fan of it myself) but at least anything – Uhura and Chapel, for example. ANYTHING. And they didn’t. But, I guess, it’s just my problem.
Anyway – I had a pretty good time watching it.
And - I finally defeated Gifs.com (because it’s the only platform I know where you can make gifs from a two and a half hours of a YouTube video) and made gifs - all gifs from the musical are mine (and bloody hell, how much time I spent trying to get them smaller, so that Tumbler would let me load them).
