Since 2003 INDIA HEATING, AIR CONDITIONING, AND REFRIGERATION
The oldest item in the British Library’s current Breaking the News exhibition (open until 21 August 2022) is an account of the Battle of Flodden in 1513. This small pamphlet is the earliest surviving example of printed news in Britain, but of course written records of contemporary events and experiences...
This copy of Froissart’s Chroniques (Royal MS 18 E ii) was made for King Edward IV (r. 1461 – 1470), who had also gained the throne of England after deposing the previous king, who died mysteriously thereafter. In this case the deposed king was Henry VI, grandson of Henry IV who had deposed Richard II. Perhaps Edward pondered on this striking parallel as he read his finely illuminated chronicle manuscript.

So bored tonight who wants to hang? Chicago or chicago burbs people only
I don’t know if I’ve ever told this story here but I just saw a post that reminded me of it so…When I was in high school my AP English class had to read Henry IV, and one student was confused as to why someone would call a person named Henry Jr ‘Hal’. Teacher asks if they want her to refer to Henry as Bolingbrook to keep it simpler (I have no idea how that’s simpler but 🤷♀️), and one of the dudes in class just whispers under his breath “Big Daddy Henry.” Entire class starts sniggering and we all proceed to refer to Henry IV as Big Daddy Henry for the rest of our time discussing the book, much to the teacher’s chagrin.
The Ghost on the Desk
Here is a short one shot of the MonsterAU I’ve been thinking of. I don’t know how long the any successive installments will be or when they will go up, but I will try to add to it.
@skeleton-richard, @themalhambird, @princess-of-france
Henry gripped his head tightly, trying to drown out the familiar voice speaking to him.
“You really have no sense of style, cousin,” Richard said, perched on the King’s desk.
Henry looked up. It was like Richard inhabited two different versions of himself as a ghost, constantly flickering between Divine King and Emaciated Corpse. It was the stuff of nightmares. “Can’t you control which version you are?” Henry said, annoyed.
Richard looked surprised. This was the first time Henry had acknowledged him in some time. He looked down at himself, watching his own transformations. “Hm. I don’t believe I can.”
“Can’t or won’t,” Henry grumbled, sinking into his chair, sullenly.
Richard gave him a dazzling smile that turned to utter horror every time he flickered to that other him. “Oh, Henry, you think me far more vindictive than I truly am. I would rather not be reminded of the awful horrors you subjected me to, but,” Richard gestured to the space between them, “here we are.”
Henry stood up angrily and stomped towards the window. “This isn’t real, you aren’t real.”
Richard chuckled. “Oh, fair coz, may-haps your humors are out of balance,” he said, a touch of mockery and condescension in his voice.
Henry did not answer as he tried to ignore the dead King’s ghost.
“Or, perhaps you’ve eaten bad cheese.”
Henry continued to try to ignore the ghost behind him.
Richard sighed. Knowing Henry, it would likely be months before he got a rise out of the man again. Who knew haunting someone could be such a bore.
Henry focused on his sons sparring outside his window. Thomas and John were practicing while Humphrey sat watching, a book open and forgotten in his lap. Hal came riding up and leapt from his horse, landing next to his youngest brother, sitting next to him. Hal kept calling to the two locked in conflict while Humphrey laughed. Henry found his expression softening as he watched.
Richard felt a twinge of envy, but that would only fester and turn him into some dark thing he wouldn’t recognize. He shook it off and walked up behind Henry.
The usurper shivered.
Richard tilted his head as he watched the four. It didn’t make sense that the boy who served him those years ago was now this tall, strapping man.
“Hal has grown quite a bit since he served me,” Richard said.
Henry nodded. “He has hit his growth spurt.”
“With all of this talk of war, what will you do?”
Henry pinched the bridge of his nose. “He will be needed, no matter what I would want for him.”
Richard wasn’t pleased with the answer, but he was already pressing his luck. As much as he disliked his cousin since he had been murdered, Henry was the only one who could see or talk to him. “As much as I dislike you, cousin, I don’t want the throne falling into the hands of the Percys,” he said with disgust.
Henry gave a huff in amusement.
“Those Northerners will have absolutely no sense of propriety or gravitas.”
“I think you forget Lancaster is in the North.”
“Hm. Did I?” Richard asked.
Henry rolled his eyes and shook his head while outside Thomas landed another hit.
