i’m all for muslims representation in bollywood but i notice that most of the positive muslim characters almost always practice some sort of hindu ritual as well and that’s marketed as a ‘redeeming factor’. like that makes them acceptable and OK. like they can’t be portrayed as practicing muslims AND good people.

A rant about the unfair turmoil in awards ceremonies of Bollywood

so i watched the big star entertainment awards yesterday and it honestly left me in a bad mood. i can’t believe how rigged awards in bollywood are. varun dhawan and badlapur was nominated in every possible category and he ended up getting all the awards he was nominated in. and abcd 2 got the best social film? wtf? amongst great nominees like bajrangi bhaijaan, dum laga ke haisha, pk! you’re telling me abcd 2 had a stronger social message than any of these movies?

plus, badlapur and ek villain had very similar storylines, and even though ek villain came out before, last year, it wasn’t critically acclaimed or praised as much as badlapur was. sidharth’s role was seen as “moderate” whereas varun’s was “daring and confident”. ek villain was never even properly nominated last year besides for it’s music whereas badlapur swept these awards. what was the big deal behind it anyway? all i saw was black drama and unreasonable sexuality pushed into a mindless race of “revenge”.

along with all this nonsense, brothers, which was an amazing family drama was only nominated once! and that too, lost it’s awards for best drama film to piku, which I would argue is more of a comedy than a drama. brothers wasn’t nominated in any other category, and neither were any of it’s characters. jackie shroff, shefali shah or sidharth could easily have been nominated for their outstanding performances, but that never happens.

it makes me so mad the way they openly discriminate between the “star kids” and the “outsiders”. varun is ALWAYS kept above sidharth in any category despite the amount of effort that sid puts into the various unique characters he chooses, whereas varun always plays the sweet chocolate boy that girls swoon over. i mean, the least you could do is acknowledge someone’s work by atleast nominating them? Sidharth did amazing as Monty and it was his best role to date where he effectively showcased the range of emotions he can deliver as an actor.

this is one thing that will always stay in bollywood, people with the bucks get the luck. varun having the “dhawan” household name and sid being the outcast who will fight for his place will always be left behind. i just want sid to really kick it off this year and be recognized cause he’s talented and has the capability to kick everyone’s ass in acting and excel. im done.
