British Idioms      A bit bolshie

At the request of @demonicangeling, I am happy to explain this one- in part, because I have often been accused of being a bit bolshie myself!

adjective

(of a person or attitude) deliberately combative or uncooperative,  full of argument, eg. "I was a bolshie teenager” 

Similar: uncooperative, awkward, contrary, truculent, difficult

The origins are not hard to find- it comes from Bolshevik, as in the Marxist Leninist faction that won the Russian revolution, notorious for factional arguments and infighting,  

Later, it became known in 50s and 60s Britain as a derogatory term for a leftist, especially a communist, socialist, or labour trade union leader.

It is often used now as a synonym for stroppy, a shortened version of obstreperous, both of which link back to difficult and argumentative and a sort of mindless hostility/negativity towards everything. It is used most often to refer to someone who has “issues” with authoritarian figures. 

Observers would consider Sherlock to be a perfect example, especially regarding Mycroft.
