Haunted house horror movie where the humans are house flippers and the audience is rooting for the ghost to kill them before they tear down all crown molding and paint all the wood.
Everyone in the notes saying this is Beetlejuice, no it's not. Yes, Catherine O'Hara's character in that movie is changing the house in a way the ghosts don't like, but she's not flipping it. She's changing it to suit her tastes. Maybe her tastes are horrible, but at least she's doing something for herself. She's planning to live there long term, not sell it for a profit to the next person who comes along.
I'm talking about something that explores the horrors of our current housing market realities where everything is fucking beige or gray. Where it's nearly impossible to find fixer uppers as a first time home buyer because people have made a job out of buying the most affordable houses in any given market and then gutting them and whitewashing them with the cheapest materials possible only to mark them up and sell them back to people who actually want to live there and might have liked or wanted a place with some character or that they could have fixed up to their tastes but now can't because the shitheads ahead of them raised the price.
There are so many ways to do this that aren't fucking Beetlejuice. (Which is a great movie! But it's not what I'm talking about!)
Personally, I'd love for it to be filmed like an HGTV show. For it to be like a standard haunted house movie, in that it's from the point of view of the people buying the house. Unlike Beetlejuice, which is from the pov of the ghosts predominantly.
Maybe there aren't even any actual ghosts. Maybe it's the house itself that's seeking revenge on these people.
Maybe it's like these awesome tags from @queen-mabs-revenge: #oh this feels very 'capitalism: a horror story' coded#the dead labor of centuries of workers screaming out from the bones of the house#the physical stress injuries and damage that the workers who created the parts of the house and who labored to build it underwent#manifesting physically in the flippers as they demolish and destroy those parts of the house in kind#like a few fingers start to lacerate and separate from their hands#bc a nameless worker caught their fingers in an unguarded blade on the production line#the horrors of industrial capitalism factory production ripping through their bodies as they rip down that crown moulding#oh gothic marxism we're really in it now
Maybe it's a million other things. But it's not Beetlejuice. Or at least it doesn't have to be Beetlejuice. It can be something else. We can have two cakes!
legend has it that if you say his name three times, @thelitcritguy (author of the above-mentioned 'capitalism: a horror story') announces a new book p much exactly about the thing 👻🏚️
Some really exciting news!
My next book has a home with the incredible, radical independent publisher Haymarket Books.
It's about haunted houses, debt, precarity, the American cultural imagination and the nightmares we've all gotten used to just living with.
I can't wait for you all to get to read it.
University of Cambridge scientists have discovered a pronounced heat island phenomenon correlated with the development of data centres.
Called the Data Heat Island Effect, the study showed that temperatures are rising an average of 3.6 degrees fahrenheit (2 degrees C) in areas immediately surrounding the " locations of the main AI hyperscaler centres", while as much as a 16.4 (9.1 degrees C) degree increase was shown in the most extreme cases. Its findings also provided insight into how widely felt the thermal effects are, claiming the centres and associated heat islands could impact a total of over 340 million people worldwide.
[...]
Each of the 6,733 data centres that constituted the research group were located away from largely dense metropolitan areas. The study claimed that heat island effects were being carried by a distance of up to 6 miles (10 kilometres) from the facilities.
[...]
"The prevailing logic has been one of acceleration, the infamous 'move fast and break things', which translates into building capacity first and perhaps mitigating later," Harvard researcher and architect Marina Otero Verzier told Dezeen. "If development continues at this pace, we will see a significant increase in emissions, the intensification of thermal effect." "These impacts extend well beyond the data centers themselves, shaping entire territories, although those living next to them usually bear the burden." "In a context of ecological fragility and energy instability, a moratorium is needed, followed by a much stricter regulatory framework that would involve public oversight."

What else would you like the average American to do? We're already marching and protesting, signing petitions, writing emails to Congress and reps that fall on deaf ears, boycotting corporations that cave to his regime or support Isreal. Genuinely asking here. So many queer people and poc have been organizing tirelessly since day 1, only to be ignored by our leaders and media. So what else exactly would you like us to do?
Mass general strike. Bring everything to a halt. Riot. Literally anything else.
And to be clear, I don’t know why this falls uniquely on the shoulders of queer people and bipoc either? I never once said that they specifically need to start making more of an effort.
It was a comment on the general lack of enthusiasm amongst the US population to sacrifice anything for change - i.e mass strikes and riots.

i think rocky and grace should gleefully lie to each other. they're just making shit up all of the time. rocky has no idea which earth traditions are real and which are elaborate jokes for grace's personal amusement. grace is never sure if rocky is teaching him actual eridian gestures or random movements to make him seem insane. do eridians actually have 5 hearts. do humans actually see scary television shows in their sleep. there is NO trust in this relationship. they are fucking with each other constantly
#phm#project hail mary#ryland grace#rocky phm#rocky the eridian#i just keep seeing takes like “rocky can tell when grace is lying” No he can't . he can't . he has no clue . and vice versa#grace [stressed]: hey adrian do eridians all migrate to space for 7 days each year#adrian: stop listening to him. stop. stop it
