Whispers At Midnight
Gregory had visited her many times during his absence but never at a time when she was aware of it. He couldn’t risk letting her know he was so near because he could not risk being found out by the undesirables he sought; and was afraid of placing her in mortal danger. If that ever happened he would never forgive himself. But on this night he simply couldn’t stand it any longer as he stood and watched her sleeping form.
With a trembling hand he lightly caressed her cheek, smoothing a strand of her fiery auburn hair back behind her ear where it had fallen across her face, hiding part of the profile he had studied so many times before. He smiled as he heard her voice in his mind calling for him softly into the night and his heart twisted in on itself for all the time that had passed with his whereabouts remaining a mystery to her. He wondered to himself if he was making a grave mistake by finally letting himself be known to her again because he could not guarantee how long his presence would be this time or any other but he yearned for her touch again…her smile…and just to hear her say his name.
He almost woke her but a noise just outside her window caused him alarm. “I’m sorry my love…but it won’t be tonight either…” he whispered as he placed a feather soft kiss on her cheek then disappeared in a mist as if he had only been an apparition.

After what they had been through before, Mei-Rin knew already that it was not safe for them to be together. And no matter how much she had fought against Gregory leaving on his own, he wouldn’t have listened to her. At the same time, though, she knew he was right. While she would be ready to keep escaping with him, or even die for him, she could not just think about herself.
And truth be told, it was not all about Gregory, either, although she was aware of the fact that he would not be happy if she got into any trouble - and what was after him was not just any trouble.
The reason of this situation laid in the very same room she did; since the last time they had been attacked, she had not dared leave her alone. Catherine mumbled something in her sleep, turning onto her side. She had grown since she had last seen her father, but she was still just a little girl. And neither her mother nor her father could risk bringing any danger so close to her.
Suddenly, Mei-Rin woke up; her dream had been so sweet. He was there, holding her, caressing her head, kissing her cheek. But as she opened her eyes, she realized it was nothing but a quiet wish, a secret prayer she whispered every evening.
At first, she was not sure what might have awoken her, so she got up quietly, trying not to wake her little daughter, and having put her glasses on began walking towards the window she had left opened slightly, for the nights had been really warm lately. If anything was going on outside, she was sure she would see it from that spot.
