BONELUST SCIENCE LESSON: "What is the difference between venomous and poisonous?" The terms venomous and poisonous are often incorrectly used interchangeably. There is, in fact, a difference between say for example a venomous insect and a poisonous insect. Both venomous and poisonous animals produce a toxin that is injurious or sometimes even lethal to another organism. The real difference between the two terms involves how that toxin is delivered. _ Venomous organisms deliver or inject venom into other organisms, using a specialized apparatus of some kind (usually fangs or a stinger). The potency of different venoms greatly varies on a number of factors. IE - The venom of certain spiders used to paralyze prey are often harmless to humans. _ Poisonous organisms, on the other hand, do not deliver their toxins directly. The entire body, or large parts of it, may contain the poisonous substance. These organisms may be harmful when eaten or touched. The defensive chemicals produced by poisonous creatures or plants may cause vomiting or blistering, or have cardiac impacts on predators that try to eat or handle them. _ Think of the "V" in venomous like a fang or stinger to help remember how the venom is injected. And just think of Poison Ivy when it comes to remembering how a poisonous toxin is spread. But remember that some animals that don't bite are poisonous instead of venomous like the Poison Dart frogs. So it isn't simply a matter of a difference between plant and arachnid/insect/animal. _ #bonelustsciencelesson https://www.instagram.com/p/Bst3RpiHKxY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=17d30siz5q8at
