Went dancing at goth night in Gainesville recently with my brother, Chris, and was reminded of these gems. Our dance crew heading out in 1989, in Tampa. They were going to the original Masquerade but I wasn’t old enough so went to the all ages club, Arts Alive, I frequented for a show. It was likely Screeching Weasel and Pink Lincolns or one of many Blemish on Society (BOS) shows I ended up at, maybe with Slap Of Reality. This is Edgar Alan Crow & I circa 1992. I rehabbed & released him back into the wild way back then. I like to think he has offspring where I released him. I've got this favorite photo taken by my friend Kyle Scott framed on my wall. Makes me smile. Although Kyle has since tragically passed. RIP 🫀 _ At the time, I lived in Gainesville, FL and was training in animal care at Santa Fe College, in their teaching zoo. One day doing rounds at the zoo we came across this pitiful sub-adult crow begging for food. Hopping around on one leg, unable to fly. Someone mentioned having no luck in rehabbing him and giving up. This was unacceptable to me and he went home with me that day to my tiny one bedroom apartment. _ After much love and patience he learned to forage on his own for food & to finally fly. I would show him if he looked under leaves there were things for him to eat. Although he preferred his favorite new treat, grapes. Anytime I was not at school and there was daylight out, Edgar was outside and I was nearby. I could call to him and he would call back to check in. I would hang a cage outside my apartment with the door open that he could learn to glide from to nearby trees. With my help. As time went on he went further and strengthened his wings. Until one day he could fly as a crow should. _ Most of my neighbors in my apartment complex gossiped that I was a witch because of Edgar and the myriad of other creatures I always seemed to have. Thankfully though, I was the one the also called on to free wild snakes, birds, insects & spiders from their apartments. There was also an issue with Edgar sneaking off to beg for treats from neighbors which I had to break him of. Because he was a wild animal after all. He only became partly domesticated as I helped him heal and grow. _ One day I was happy with his progress and contacted my Uncle Don who ran the @kanapahagardens and got permission to release Edgar there. I knew it was a safe spot for him to be free. I took him to the base of the walkway of the big sinkhole and let him fly. He called back to me and we said goodbye. SURGERY GORE WARNING! I appreciate everyone’s patience while I’m on the mend from my recent right thyroidectomy. Which was years delayed due to the pandemic. I’m very happy the surgery is in the past & look forward to a healthier future now! Pictured is the 3” long enlarged nodule removed from my thyroid, AKA Kuato. Which was crushing my esophagus as it continued to grow. Causing issues with breathing & eating. Here’s to hoping the biopsy comes back Cancer free (as it did last year before removed) & that I won’t need thyroid medication now since my thyroid was still functioning normally at the time of surgery. And also that the remaining nodules are not an issue in the future. I was out of surgery & on the way home in record time. Pulled the blood drain tube & stitches out myself the day after surgery & am healing up very quickly! This was my first surgery ever. _ DID I KEEP KUATO? No, I couldn’t keep the removed nodules because they needed to be tested. My surgeon was however excited to get this photo for me & share it. But would not get me photos of the actual surgery. _ STILL OPEN FOR BUSINESS! My shop is open & I’m shipping out worldwide daily. From the Florida Museum of Natural History @floridamuseum in Gainesville, FL. 🐢 Exploring Museum Collections: This two-headed loggerhead sea turtle is a popular specimen in our teaching collection. Now that it's been CT scanned, we know so much more about what's going on under its shell! Loggerhead turtles have an average clutch size of 112 eggs, and hatchlings incubate for about 80 days. The temperature of the nest and the eggs' placement in the clutch define their gender. Babies lose up to 20% of their body mass through dehydration as they flipper from nest to ocean. In Florida, raccoons commonly prey on turtle eggs. But as usual, humans have the biggest impact on turtle nesting success. Baby turtles have to face many predators to make it safely to the open sea. Because of the dangerous lives of baby turtles, this little loggerhead wouldn't have survived long in the ocean. In this #CTScan of the tiny turtle, we can see the conjoined twins share a pelvis, limbs, and a 'shell' but have separate spines and heads. Every so often I see this amazing image making the viral rounds again without any credit or info. So here is some background info I found some years back now after doing some extensive research: _ "So around November a friend gave me a deer carcass for a project I’m in the process of cultivating. I left it hanging in a tree over winter to dry out. Today, I went to take it down…but to my surprise, I found new life forming in the heart of death." - photographer/artist, Kari N. Hrundka _ I was curious what happened with this art project & the birds. When I asked about this & shared the above info some years back on tumblr I got this response from her: _ "I spent the last year documenting road kill for an illustration series that has to do with the relation of death in flora and fauna. The rib cage will be used as a sculpture piece in the gallery showing once that time comes. I started learning how to articulate skeletons too, so I'm hoping to get a whole deer once the hunting season starts up and maybe use that instead." _ I have since tried to follow up about this project many times but sadly never saw anything about it ever again on her not defunct website and inactive tumblr accounts. VULTURE SLAVES?! Oh boy, here we go again! 🤣 Poor @forgotten_boneyard had to talk to 2 FL F&W officers today before I even woke up. Because someone here reported me for capturing vultures for the purpose of cleaning carcasses for me! Educate yourself please before casually reporting someone to the authorities. Their response: Deputy 1 - So, do you see any violations here? Deputy 2 - No, it’s more like they’re doing a community service. _ First off, I’m absolutely certain I’m the number one person in the #VultureCulture community to educate others about the #migratorybirdtreatyact LONG before this lifestyle was trending & even had a mainstream name. So the idea that I am capturing live vultures to be my bone cleaning slaves is absolutely ludicrous! You can see them flying in all of my videos. _ I have been educating people worldwide since at least 2008, about the importance of knowing your animal parts laws. I’m also a lifelong animal advocate, rescue wild animals & have a pet rescue @jonesysfriends , do pet memorial work @bonelustpetmemorials & consider myself to be a naturalist & ethical Natural History artist. I also regularly contact F&W myself to report animal cruelty & poaching. So I just acquired 2 more contacts I will absolutely be contacting in the future!
