“Taylia finally gave in and lifted Mirilyn, holding her firmly in her arms. Mirilyn’s eyes flitted and her arms limply swayed from side to side a bit as Taylia shifted. Meanwhile Jasper bent very gently lifted the boys body, careful not to squeeze him too hard as he maneuvered the boy over his shoulders. He willed his thin legs not to buckle under the weight of his burden. Taylia nodded for him to lean the way, and Jasper did, ascending the slope to resume following the road towards town. They carried their cargo in silence, the clouds parting just enough for a few stars to peak at the earth below before being covered again.”
