I just finished The Giver and added it to my 2018 read list. I was and am working on Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shatterly, but while I found it interesting and engaging, it’s still hard to simply listen straight through. I needed to alternate between some easy reading during my progress and found that The Giver, a book I hadn’t read since I was maybe pre-teenaged, was available.
I definitely remembered all the finer points of this book. I never had watched the movie. It was a fascinating read, and I think it poses an interesting query, one that definitely has taken probably a new shape now that I am so much older. The society it presented seemed so obviously bad as a kid, but now, it feels far less black and white (ha). More complex.
It’s kind of strange that this version of ‘safety gone too far’ hadn’t stayed with me. I’m so used to the ones that look so scary from the inside whereas this is a scary from the outside sort of deal. And though it was short and simple, I didn’t feel like it needed much more than it provided. I can see why it was presented to me in school. Wish I could remember actually having any discussions about it. It was definitely worth the re-read, and the narrator was pretty good. ^‿^
Well, that was a lot more terrifying and violent than I'd expected.

Book 31 of the 50 book challenge. Out of the Silence by Eduardo Strauch. Strauch is one of the 16 survivors of the crash in the Andes. He and 2 of the 3 other of his cousins also survived. 1 died in the crash. He was 26 and not a rugby player, but was a friend of the Captain of the team since they were 7. It’s a good book and I’m glad he shared his story.
There’s a lot happening in animorphs #31 but I just keep thinking of how Jake’s poor parents are really going through it with the family emergencies lately. First cousin Sadler gets hit by a car, is on life support, then dies. Then Grandpa G dies. Then Tom gets his leg broken in a freak pier collapse incident. Like give these poor people a break
Ok I need everyone to go to the audiobook of animorphs #31: the conspiracy and zoom ahead to 1:09:15 and behold the glorious bird sound that narrator macleod andrews makes
Book 31 of the 50 book challenge. Mash by Richard Hooker. This is what the movie Mash and tv series Mash are based on. I was curious how different and the same the books are. Certain characters in the tv show that lasted longer, leave earlier in the book, BJ, Colonel Potter, and Charles are not in it at all or are actually different named characters. It was different and kinda fun. I watched mash when I was a kid in the mid to late 80’s and saw the movie a bit later.
