Reading Ready Player One and it's fascinating how the book doesn't expect you to be familiar with any of the pop culture or gaming terms it's so heavily built upon. It delivers exposition on real-world niches in the same way it delivers exposition on the fictional worldbuilding. It defines every acronym the first time it appears. The book about video games doesn't expect it's readers to know what XP or an NPC or a DND module or even autism is anymore than it expects readers to know what the OASIS or The Stacks or James Halliday is. It's kinda fascinating cuz I'm a casual gamer, so I figured I'd be in the target audience for this book, but it takes it's time to ensure that a kid who spends all their time in the library, not on the computer, would also be able to understand what's going on. Which is very sweet.
