I started listening to Everything I Never Told You, which I have heard nothing but good things about, and it is just everything I hate about “literary fiction.”
Overwritten like you would not believe.
Every other sentence contains a phrase I SWEAR I have read in 500 other books (ie: their bodies fit together perfectly; the curtain of her hair; she breathed in the smell of the room like a fine wine...)
Welcome to Dead Girl Town ft. dangerous secret male friend/clear red herring, angry brother & special guest star, the indifferent police.
OH, look, Dad is a professor and he has a female TA. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT POSSIBLY HAPPEN THERE???
I try to maintain a general policy of not reading novels about the struggles of heterosexual marriage or adultery, but I also like to keep up on the “literary fiction” bestsellers for work, and these two things are for some reason completely at odds with each other.
I was going to finish listening to it, but I caved and found spoilers about the ending, and guess what, it seems vague and nonsensical.
