Things that surprised me the most about Darkling
Writing the second book in the trilogy was infinitely harder than writing book one!
I always find the second act of a book the most difficult part.
It was something I knew about myself.
But, for some reason, it took me a while to figure out that was part of the reason Darkling took me a while click into.
Because Book Two of a trilogy is, inherently, the second act of the series.
So simple, once I realised. It was a definitive facepalm moment!
It took me months to realise the problem was I needed a new location!
I tried every trick in my toolkit to get past, what I thought was, writers block. I even went so far as to try redrafting Darkling from page one.
It was only while I was on holiday, and spotted someone making hand-painted seaglass bookmarks, that the solution came to me.
I’d had the characters retreating to a location they knew was safe. Maintaining the status quo.
What I needed was something new, and uncertain, and an entirely new location was born.
A new side character has become my favourite side character to write.
My favourite Side-Character in Darkling wasn’t unexpected. I knew he’d be showing up, but he surprised me with his POV being so messy and fun.
I fondly describe him as an anxious little mess of a man.
He only has a handful of POV chapters in Darkling, but they’re all important moments, and I’m really looking forward to everyone’s reactions to him.
And the secrets he holds!
