Check out The Perfect Host -
Sometimes the demons in your past are literal.

When Th'xi'niran tried to claim
While it's far from the last Mia Graves novel I plan on writing, it marks the closure of a couple of major plot threads. Think of it like a "season finale." Here's the summary from the back of the book:
Sometimes the demons in your past are literal. When Th’xi’niran tried to claim Mia Graves as his vessel, Sarah Masters lost half of her soul saving the young witch. Now it’s three years later, and Mia and Sarah have gone their separate ways, each doing their best to heal. Mia has taken a job managing a local witchy bookstore in the quaint college town of Parrish Mills, and has built a new life for herself. She has friends, stability, and almost everything she was missing back in Boston. But no one can truly escape their past, especially not Mia Graves. When Sarah arrives in town to tell Mia that a cult of Th’xi’niran worshipers has found her, Mia’s world falls into chaos. The demon’s followers intend to complete the act that failed in that dark warehouse. They plan on making Mia the demon’s permanent host in our world, and they’re going to do it soon. With the emotional and spiritual scars still fresh, Mia must gather what allies she can to stop the oncoming darkness before it’s too late.

“Everything must have a beginning… and that beginning must be linked to something that went before.” – Mary Shelley
In true chaotic fashion, I’ve been on quite the journey and rather busy behind the scenes over the past year. I’ve been holding on to this for months, so I’m thrilled to finally be one step closer to sharing Veda and Hiram – plus Antaris, the magic and lore of this world, and Proventia. I can’t wait to unravel this mystery with you.
Sight Unseen has lived in my head and heart for a long time. It’s not a rewrite, it's a love letter to the heart of a certain very long fic of mine. It means the world to be able to bring it into yours as my debut novel.
I’ve been asked about publishing in the past, and since writing began as an outlet for me, I always believed it was out of reach, so this whole experience has been surreal and humbling – filled with plenty of silent screaming (like my screaming cat PFP) but also so much joy in exploring my creativity.
I wouldn’t be here without so many wonderful people: my agent, who has brainstormed with me, believed in this book, and guided me through every step of the process; my family and friends, who kept me sane and yelled at me to hydrate along the way (I’d name them all, but there’s a word count limit, I’m sure). My editors and the entire team at 47North, who truly saw my vision and helped me carry it across the finish line and into life. And lastly, every fellow member of fandom -reader, writer, and lurker who supported my chaotic shenanigans (wordiness and all).

Forget romance. Where’s my quirky magical creature sidekick that I have to disguise as a stuffed animal that keeps causing hilarious hijinks. You know, the one all magical girl anime promised me I would have?
How does magic work in NeXus?
Hey there! So magic is like radiation--stay with me!
I am a science nerd, I like science and I applied science shit to magic in my world in order to treat magic in a way that doesn't make it science, and to me, I think it's best to treat it like a force in the universe rather than treating it like a method for a character to have examined, mastered and calculated around because magic becomes less magical when your characters can predict it.
SO in NeXus magic acts a force that is able to chaotically rearrange particles into other randomized particles, allowing it to make matter fluid the longer said matter is held in magic. Magic's counter balance is Gnosis which is a force that solidifies and keeps matter stable in opposition to magic.
People who can use magic are people who after many generations in their lineage, are genetically predisposed to absorb magical particles. Depending on where these particles settle in the body, this can inform the kind of powers you get, and as humans have evolved in history, people have developed different genetic pre-dispositions, making for a variety which is where get different magical classifications of people who are called archetypes.
When a lot of magic gathers in one place, that creates what is called Alchemy and it is the most unstable form of magic as it distorts particles altogether, Alchemy can only be stopped from gathering by using Gnosis which humans have also developed genetic dispositions to absorbing in their bodies.
If you as a person are more pre-disposed to having more magic in your body, you are what is called a bacchanalian. They are able to use magical abilities thanks to magic in your body that has warped your physiology and allowed you to use magical powers. If you are more pre-disposed to holding Gnosis in your body, you are a Warder. Warders are normal people who passively and unknowingly are able to project wards of Gnosis around them that negate the effects of magic and shield them from alchemy.
The more warders in an area there are, the less that magic works and the less chances that there's going to be alchemy present there. The more Bacchanalians there are, the less restrained magic is and the more chances that alchemy can form. With this in mind, alchemy is found more in unpopulated areas than it is in urban environments.
and that's a lil bit on how magic works
