woagh alien man
i didn't suffer through three books and read “it's my own name i'm afraid of forgetting.”/“i want you to know my name, the name i was given not the title i took for myself. will you have it, alina?”/“your name is tattooed on your heart.” only for netflix to throw it away and replace it with “please, call me aleksander.” in literally the second episode.
BEN BARNES as GENERAL KIRIGAN Shadow and Bone S01E06 "The Heart Is an Arrow"
Oh my fucking god ?!
I fundamentally do not understand wanting your favorite character to be perfect and subsequently uninteresting. If a character has no flaws and does nothing wrong and never makes mistakes or missteps, they’re boring. And their story will be boring as well. Characters need to fuck up sometimes in order to have depth and dimension. They need to mess up so the story can have surprises and twists and a plot.
“They’re 100% right all the time and never have to learn anything and will not change at all from beginning to end” is so boring and is not a story worth telling
Remember:
You are not evil for liking a villanous character.
You are not evil for writing a pure evil villain as sympathetic.
You are not evil for writing a fic with a villain redemption.
You are not evil for giving a villain a tragic backstory.
No matter how many times people tell you "You're evil for [X]", don't believe it. You can like whatever character you like because it's only that: a character. You are not liking a REAL murderer, a REAL fascist, a REAL villain. You're just liking a CHARACTER. And you have the right to like WHATEVER character you want without being called evil or without being told "your moral is questionable".
What REAL villains do is permanent, because the harm THEY do is real and no one can do anything to change it. But in fiction? You control fiction. You can control if you want to include time travel in your fics, if you want people to be revived or reincarnated. You can't do the same with real people and that's why you CAN'T compare liking a REAL villain with liking a FICTIONAL villain. Because a fictional's villains actions can be fixed, or deleted from the timeline if those villains time-travel and decide not to be evil. Real villains' actions are permanent.
So please, stop saying people who like villains are "evil" just for liking a CHARACTER.
