Tun Daim appears weak during book lunch at UKM
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9, 2014:
Former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin appeared lethargic when present to launch the Transforming Malaysia: Dominant And Competing Paradigms book at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) this evening.
The veteran Umno politician, who was clad in a gold batik shirt, appeared thin and walked weakly heading to the hall where the event held.
The event, which was supposed to begin at 3pm had to be delayed to two hours due to Daim’s illness — believed to be high blood pressure.
Aside from walking slowly, Daim also did not appear cheerful and stuttered when delivering his speech.
It is understood that UKM had to extend its health centre’s operating hours for fear of unwanted incident occurring to the former politician.
The book, which was launched by Daim, as about researches done by the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (Ikmas) and Kursi Pok Rafeah, which was named after Daim’s late mother, with the latter being a patron for the past 10-years.
In his speech, Daim said the status of a developed country was meaningless if its people of various ethnicity were still far apart due to racial disparities.
The efforts to break the racial barriers should be done with a new paradigm to unite all races.
“Early last month, I had launched a book titled, The Colour of Inequality by Dr Muhammad Khalid.
“During the launch, I had said that the status of a developed country, which Malaysia aspires to be, will mean nothing if her people are still earning below the poverty line and cannot afford to buy a house, along with continuous injustice taking place,
“I standby that same statement and I stress that it would not be realised as long as Malaysians of various races, the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazans etc are apart due to racial disparities.”
