Why did Amon just wear washable makeup to look like he was scarred? Because that way he can just wash it off and move about unnoticed. If he had surgery, he'd attract too much attention. It explains how he could appear out of nowhere in Episode 6.

Except that Amon always moved around with his followers. And even if he wanted to move out in public to meet his followers, he couldn’t say “I’m going to move around in secret without my mask” because then they would wonder where his scarred face was (now it is logical that they might have never seen him sans mask and that they wouldn’t be looking for an unscarred face because they trust him, but it’s still risky and seems unnecessary). He would want to keep his face scarred for as long as he remained with his men.

I mean, this is a reasonable argument, and a new one, but I’m still angry at that solution because it took far too many factors and rolled them together. In its defense, most of the factors had already been put into place–the arena was always by the water, and in easy reach (Korra jumped through a window in the second episode), but the whole situation was a MESS of Critical Hits and Critical Failures.

However, to be fair, it does follow a fairly logical chain. Man gets kicked, he falls out window. Man falls out window of waterside building on children’s cartoon, he falls in water. Man falls in water, he wants to get to surface. Man who wants to get to surface has waterbending power, he waterbends to surface. Man has facepaint on, facepaint washes off.

The issues stem from him making a HUGE WATER TORNADO and the mask falling off; also, they were his mistakes and not Korra’s actions and decisions.

AND YET…I am okay with these nowadays because this is no longer the end to Korra’s story. That was just the beginning. Aang’s actions were largely guided in the first book’s finale, and Zhao also secured his own destruction with some help from Yue’s sacrifice. Korra did a lot of other awesome things; also, the first book was something of a failure for her. She didn’t save the Lieutenant, she lost her bending, Amon died, Tarrlok died, and the city was a mess. The people turned things around.

Nowadays, though, it’s kind of a delightful mess. I look forward to rewatching it. Someday.
