Just gonna leave this here incase anyone wants it, it's for all ages.

In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, I’m going to plug one of the best books I read this year and recommend There There by Tommy Orange. Here’s some things I loved about it:

1) The authors multi perspective way of storytelling is so good. Like seriously, SO good. You can see the threads of all of these people weaving together but from different vantage points and it’s just so beautifully done.

2) The inclusion of the Alcatraz Occupation as a pivotal moment in some of these characters’ lives was for me, as a history major, super interesting. If you don’t know anything about Richard Oakes and the Occupation of Alcatraz, I recommend reading about it here.

3) I love the way the author drops in music references. You can tell that music was his big passion before he became a writer and insight into his musical preferences were fun for me as someone who once upon a time wanted to be a sound engineer.

4) How often do we see books about the experiences of Urban Indians/Native Americans/Indigenous People? Like there are so many stories about rez life, and those are all incredibly eye opening as well, but There There is set in Oakland, California and I thought that was really cool. This is the first book I’ve ever read about the experiences of Indigenous People (even if they’re fictional experiences) in an urban setting and it just hit different than some of the other Indigenous writings I’ve read.

5) It’s really fucking good. Like I said, one of the best books I read this year. I cannot recommend it enough.
