Last year I decided to make a book snake, a fun way to keep track of the books I read and to use up my yarn stash. After finishing each book, I knit a section of the snake in colors to match the book cover, with a small white spacer section between each one. I ended up reading 24 books in 2025, and the finished snake is 13 feet long!

Standouts so far were Giovanni's Room, Ancillary Mercy and the incredible In the Dream House. I can't wait to check out Machado's other works!

Last year, I crocheted a granny square for every book I read and put them together for a book blanket. As I have a bit of yarn left over in quite a few colours I'm doing a book snake this year; a ring for every book I finish, with the colour corresponding to its genre. Much less work than for the book blanket, but also great fun! I'll put pictures of the finished blanket and the book snake under a read more for anyone interested =)

Not perfect by any means, but very cozy! The blanket consists of 99 squares: 86 for the books I read and 13 squares separating the months. Books from one series got squares with the same crochet pattern and the colours were lifted from the book covers.

My First Book Snake entry

My first entry! Technically I'm not finished reading it, I have 15 hours left for Sanderson's Wind and Truth. I generally ready mostly Science Fiction and Fantasy, so my genre list takes that into account. I find the Stormlight books are equal parts Science Fiction AND fantasy so it has it's own category.

I was having a conversation about temperature blankets and a crocheted Book snake to record book genres, and I decided to make a digital version of the idea. I have a shareable .clip and .psd as well with the shading layers! Feel free to print and tweak this to suit your own! I made a version for myself with the genres I'm likely to read, since I mostly just read Sci-Fi and Fantasy...
