At first glance, this attractive book token design oozes upper middle class book loving comfort, with the modern desk lamp, book cases against the walls, horse art and tubular metal chair. It took me a while to notice the view through the window, which is of utter destruction, presumably as a result of the Blitz. That places this in the 1940s and acts a peculiar reminder of life’s uncertainties.

Beano has partnered with World Book Day, the charity that encourages children to love books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own, offering a £1 Book Token with this week’s issue, to help support their Share A Million Stories campaign.

The partnership has the support of Dav Pilkey, author and illustrator of the Dog Man and Captain Underpants book series.
