Song of the Day: BOOKLUB - Western Hours "Listen, listen to it's coping power. You are this novelty"
N.B This track was song of the day for 25/04/2014
TALENT: BOOKLUB
TB: Introduce yourselves! Nic: Hi I’m Nic, I sing and play guitar. Ian: I am Ian. I sing and play sax and sometimes keyboard Simon L: I’m Simon (Lee). I play bass guitar Simon K: I’m the better Simon. I play drums Michael: I play guitar.
TB: How did you guys come together to start making music? Nic: Simon L and I began emailing each other music we were making and we both ended up adding to the others material and began forming songs and so we thought up the idea to form a band and introduce further critics and musicians, Ian and Michael, who we’d also been interested in working with for a very long time. After writing too many parts for our first song ‘ii’ we decided to bring in Simon L’s roommate, Simon K in order to perform live and now we’re one big happy library. Ian: Yeah. Nic and I wanted to sing together and make pop (the genre, not ‘popular’) music along the lines of Grimes and things. Then I joined him and Simon Lee and Mike came too and we wrote things. Simon L: Yeah that’s pretty much how its started. Ahead of our first show we realised it was silly to think we could survive playing with a loop pedal, so we asked Simon K if he would join – he’s a multi-instrumentalist so it helped us loads. Simon K: Yeah I basically saved the day Michael: Yup.
TB: How would you describe your music? Ian: It’s pop. Dreamy blown out indiscernible emotion music. Simon L: I don’t really know. It changed every time we play but it always has a hazy pop foundation. TB: What are some of your influences/inspirations - musical or otherwise Most of the group have other projects going on - is Booklub a main focus or more of a fun side project? Nic: Diiv, Wulyf, Nirvana & Talking heads. Ian: John Wizards, Blood Orange, Andre 3000, Beyonce, Frank Ocean, Vampire Weekend, James Blake, Fleet Foxes, Phil Collins, Glenn Miller, Steve Jobs, Odd Future, Charles and Ray Eames, SL, Vice, Pitchfork, Soundcloud, high quality beautiful things. Booklub is a side project for me. I run a creative collaborative with some amazing dudes and we are called naas (naas.co.za) and a magazine called PLATFORM (platformonline.co.za). I used to be in another band, and I’m trying to start a solo Neo-soul/RnB/emotion project. Simon L: As far as band influences go I think of Wu Lyf, Diiv, Foals. But personal inspiration comes from bands like BLK JKS, and the Brainfeeder dudes like FlyLo and Teebs. Michael: D’Angelo, The Drums, Hiatus Kaiyote, The Smiths, Roy Hargrove, Alicia Keys, Mac Demarco and Esperanza Spalding. I’m finishing High school so I guess it’s a side project. TB: What do you hope people take away from your songs? Nic: I hope its gives people that happy exhausted feeling you get after swimming in the ocean all day. Ian: I hope people feel some emotions. Like, the best music in the world is music that makes you feel emotions, so I hope that people fall into bliss or cry or apologise to someone or turn their life around or dance alone or something, something emotional. Michael: What Nic said.
TB: And finally, what are you listening to at the moment? What's on your iPod (especially any guilty pleasures you don't like people knowing about)? Nic: Mac DeMarco – Brother and Christopher Cross – Ride like the wind Ian: Portishead, James Blake, John Wizards, Blood Orange, Frank Ocean. On repeat. Simon L: The new Teebs album Simon K: Rhye, Jungle, Junip, The National, Counting Crows. As for guilty pleasures: all the cheesy stuff from the early 2000s that my 10-year-old self loved… Smash Mouth, Crazy Town etc. Michael: Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Gregory Porter, Frank Ocean. Guilty pleasures: Katy Perry, King Krule and Martin Garrix. FIND BOOKLUB ON THEIR: YOUTUBE | FACEBOOK | TWITTER CHECK OUT MORE INTERVIEWS ON TWENTYBLISS
