📕👬 BOOK OF MAN 👬📕 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was an honour to take part in the @TheBookofMan exhibition #LookingForMen a couple of weeks back & get snapped by the legendary rock ‘n’ roll photographer @DeanChalkley_ 📸 The exhibition highlighted the changing representations of men & what can be done to improve the way men see themselves. I disagree with this, actually. What women want is informed by patriarchy, just as what men want is, and therefore deserving of critique and examination. It’s only so long that we can continue assigning an alleged inherent goodness and competency to women collectively regarding matters of love, life and relationships relative to men’s alleged inherent badness and incompetency based on the reactionary romanticizing of the former and demonizing of the latter when it comes to matters of love and relationships.  Women are no more virtuous than men in this area and are just as much in need of unpacking, yet the pseudo-feminist narrative continues to uphold patriarchal notions of women being virtuous compared to men by default. Also, we need to do away with the notion that men don’t provide emotional labor to women.  The difference between the emotional labor provided to women by men and the inverse is that a man is fed patriarchal doctrine from boyhood that dictates that a woman, for no sufficient reasons outside of her existence, his attraction to her and need of validation from her, deserve his emotional labor, time and attention, in fact that he should be honored that she request it and view her doing so as a favor.
