Shahein called to say Shelim Bhai and family had a few books. Turned out they were giving g away hundreds of excellent books which I’ve passed onto three refugee families, a few homeless friends, a charity shop and a supplementary school. In one lunch hour Bookbike London has a heaved hot another PB and reached 13,000 books. Wasn’t expecting such a huge bonus today. Twenty sleeping bags from @humdumuk shared with homeless friends and local rough sleepers. With Bookbike they have the added bonus of a book and food parcel if they choose. With us all being a month into the new year it’s a good time for grassroots projects to assess how things are going and weigh uk how the rest of the year is likely to look. It doesn’t look promising. In fact at least half a dozen residents I catch U.K. with on a weekly basis have intimated that their mental health has been affected a great deal by the cost of living crisis and their total inability to make ends meet. Those with dependents are really feeling the pinch. As part of the Bookbike outreach I collect food from Humdum and DCI. As regularly prepare parcels at Company any Drinks. A NHS nurse who used to refer mental health patients for. A little extra support has now resorted to seeking the very same help. Bookbike started off as a small idea, to share free books with anybody and everybody. Using my cycle to get me out and about was a game changer, no parking problems and I got to get out and explore whole communities. Then came the Covid global pandemic and lockdown. I continued to cycle and added a food parcel to book deliveries. The vision remains the same, the only difference is the huge numbers of new friends I’ve made. I still haven’t bought a cycle, or Ispent any money on books. It’s all been taken care of by the community. I even have use of creative spaces at venues like @goingpicking to help me plan, assess, review activities for Bookbike London, the Little Litter League and the Kind Counter.
