Today we bring you a few lovely bookplates, designed by Frederick Garrison Hall (1879–1946)! Hall was an architect by trade but is better-known for his etchings.

These images are from the Cleveland Museum of Art's open access collection, available to browse on JSTOR (1, 2, 3, 4).

All I know is, I definitely don't need to adorn the books in my personal library with a stamp like these, but that won't stop me from exploring some of my options...

Curwen Initials

These initials were designed by noted Dutch book and type designer Jan Van Krimpen (1892-1958) in 1925 for use by Harold Curwen's Curwen Press. The alphabet shown here appears in The Curwen Press Miscellany, edited by Curwen's typographer Oliver Simon (1895-1956) and published in London for the Curwen Press by the venerable Jewish publishing house Soncino Press in a limited edition of 275 copies in 1931.

Our copy, a gift from the estate of our late friend Dennis Bayuzick (1946-2022), is from the collection of the English book collector Major John Roland Abbey (1894-1969) with his bookplate designed and engraved by Sir Henry John Fanshawe Badeley (1874-1951) in 1920.

Some days ago, I posted about ex-libris (also called book-plates), the personal seals used to stamp someone's book collection. They've existed for centuries, but here in Catalonia they lived a "golden age" during the Modernisme (Catalan equivalent of Art nouveau) movement in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In that post, I showed some of the ex-libris made by Alexandre de Riquer (1856-1920), one of the most prolific artists in this field.

Today I want to show some of the ex-libris made by one of Alexandre de Riquer's students, called Josep Triadó (1870-1929).

My favourite thing about ex-libris is how rich they are in allegories and symbolism. You can try to guess the person's job, interests and values from it.
