ALFRED HITCHCOCK. Topaz, 1969. Collection of ten borderless press photographs from the set of the 1969 film. Seven photographs featuring director Hitchcock at work. Eight photographs with the stamp of the French news agency BEZ on the verso. Based on 1967 novel by Leon Uris, about a French agent who helps the United States uncover the presence of Russian missiles in Cuba. All the photographs in this collection depict the filming of Hitchcock's original ending, unused ending: a shootout between spies in the middle of an empty soccer stadium. After poor test screenings, Hitchcock would shoot two completely different endings, finally settling on tthe third one. My Year of the Book - Day 19: Last Friday (Day 12), we waited for the weekend with Witold Rybczynski. Today, let’s try to really get away, like Si Morley did in Jack Finney’s time travel-mystery-romance-illustrated novel masterpiece, “Time and Again” (1970). Finney’s detailed and evocative prose brought the dual New York Cities of 1970 and the 1880s to life, and his tale of an advertising illustrator recruited by a top secret government agency to travel through time for a gradually revealed purpose seems more than plausible in his gifted hands. Again, I won’t reveal too much...just get a copy and read it. You’ll thank me later. Finney wrote short stories for the top magazines of his day (some of which have been collected in book form), and novels such as “The Body Snatchers,” “Good Neighbor Sam” and “Assault on a Queen,” which — despite their vast differences in genre, plot and tone — were each made into popular films (in the case of Snatchers, FOUR films). Many of his other works, short and long, also found their way to the big and small screens. As with “Carter Beats the Devil” (Day 14), I bought multiple copies specifically to loan to friends. Jacket is just a bit taller than the book, an early variant printed separately for review copies. Trumbo would go on to adapt his novel to film (as both screenwriter and director) over thirty years after its publication, in 1971.
