Many #writingcommunities come and go, but I never forget those who were around when I needed them most. @Write_onedge, once The Red Dress Club, was the first online writing community I found. It gave me both permission and motivation to start sharing my creative writing on my blogs and helped me build a bookshelf filled with inspiration, motivation and education on the craft. I was reminded of them today when I pulled THE MEMOIR PROJECT by @mroachsmith off my shelf and saw this note on the title page. It appears this month marks the five year anniversary of my first read through! Many of you know my husband is a high school English teacher. With February approaching, we have been discussing the books by black writers that each of us have been exposed to in the last year (and recalling our favs from years before) so he can incorporate them into his planning in the month ahead and have recommendations for students as well. This conversation got me thinking: where are my books on writing craft by people of color? As far as I know, I current own only one. I can’t figure out if this is a failing in my own exposure, or if there is merely a lacking of this representation in that section of the bookstore. The one book I do own is JUST WRITE HERE’S HOW! written for young writers rather than a broader audience. It is written by the fabulous Walter Dean Meyers and I love it, but I know not everyone enjoys reading a book for which they were not the intended audience, or that doesn’t go as deep as perhaps they feel they are prepared for.
