Western Swinging and a-Dancin'
OK, maybe you’re unsure exactly what Western Swing is. Well, that’s easy. You know the song Woody’s Roundup on Toy Story II? The theme song for Woody’s old black and white TV show? That’s Western Swing. But the Western Swing at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco on Saturday was even better, because the first band, the West Nile Ramblers, had not only a fiddle, guitar, bass and drums but also a great trumpet. And they weren’t afraid to use it!
That couple at 3:07 coming in from the right sure can dance, huh? The West Nice Ramblers are a group from Davis, CA. When they’re not playing in the big city, they are often performing as headliners for events like Big Tomato Day. (That’s a real thing, BTW, that Big Tomato Day.) Wow. And, they were followed by The Bootcuts, with more of their hand-clappin', knee stompin', and always funny, original country songs. Here’s one about keeping your man down on the farm.
I hog-tied his ankles, I wouldn't let him go.. I got my baby. I got him sittin' over here... Also playing Misisipi Mike & The Midnight Gamblers, a straight country band who played some great classics like Livin' on Tulsa Time, who were great, and Lady A & The Heel Draggers with more western swing and who were also probably great, but were playing a little past my bedtime! This was all at the "Honky-Tonk Showdown," which is an annual event and performed this year at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco. Great venue and great music! Here are more pictures of The Bootcuts in action.
And, a final picture of the West Nile Ramblers
