Read a short Star Trek story with Boothby as the main character and it so fully misunderstood where Boothby sits in the grander scheme of the Star Trek idea of Utopia. See in this short story Boothby is a librarian who gave that up to delight in gardening after having a good mentor about it. It does presents Boothby as the wise mentor he’s mentioned to be in TNG, but it misunderstands a fundamental part of Boothby being Just The Groundskeeper.

While the backstory of a librarian does cover the Why Would He Know All This Shakespeare Shit, it fundamentally misses the point that in a Star Trek future someone can pursue a career of hands on physical labor with a fervent passion and still have the resources and education to be a wise mentor and learned individual. That’s the utopia aspect. That’s what Star Trek is all about.

It’s not the giving up a life of scholarly pursuits to have a menial labor job that you love. It’s pursuing the life of a labor you love without the stigma of being Just The Groundskeeper. Without the presumption that you are uneducated or stupid. It’s the idea that Just The Groundskeeper is just as interesting and important as the captain of a starfleet flagship. That's what Boothby is about.
